A Romano-British Licking Dog Statue | Christie's

Antiquities specialist Claudio Corsi looks at an ancient bronze licking dog, the rarest object from a complete hoard of Roman bronze artefacts found by metal detectorists in England in 2017. On a Bank Holiday Sunday in August 2017 two metal detectorists, with a combined 40 years’ experience, stumbled across one of the most intriguing hoards of Roman artefacts to be discovered in Britain in recent memory. Under the cultivated earth of a farmer’s field in Gloucestershire in south-west England, the pair discovered an unusual deposit of broken hinges, buckles and studs, as well as 20 fragments of a four-foot tall bronze figure, pieces of cast animal-shaped bowls, half a pair of tweezers and the handle of a frying pan. Additionally, there was a coin minted in Trier in Germany between 321-324 AD featuring a portrait of the Roman Emperor Crispus, the eldest son of the Emperor Constantine. The date of the coin provided a date after which the hoard must have been buried. Among the find there was one object which had miraculously survived intact — a bronze statue of a ‘licking’ dog, the only example ever found in Britain. Find out more: http://bit.ly/2NerDY1

Specialist Becky MacGuire looks at a selection of ‘soldier’ vases from The Tibor collection, which was sold at Christie’s in New York in 2019. One might think that the root of the term ‘soldier vase’ is fairly obvious, as these masterworks of Chinese Export porcelain do, in many ways, resemble stick-straight sentries. They stand nearly five feet tall — even taller when raised on their carved giltwood stands — and they are often installed in guard-like fashion, flanking doorways and mantelpieces in stately homes. Then there are the silhouettes themselves. Gently curved and exactingly proportional, they swell at what might be one’s shoulders and taper at what could be read as one’s ankles and, higher up, one’s neck. They are vibrantly and intricately enamelled and some are topped with figurines of Buddhist lions, which serve as handles, though one might see them as the pointed or feathered military helmets of yore. Two Royal Writing Desks: Marie Antoinette’s Writing Desk and a Rothschild Bureau | Christie's

Head of European Furniture Paul Gallois on two wildly different yet equally beautiful 18th-century desks — one made in France, the other in Germany — and the tantalising possibility that their royal owners may have written to each other from them. The Louis XVI ormolu-mounted writing desk shown below was conceived in around 1785 by Jean-Henri Riesener (1734-1806), arguably the most celebrated cabinet-maker of the 18th century. It was commissioned for Queen Marie-Antoinette of France for her personal use at the Petit Trianon, her private residence at the Château de Versailles. The circular mark ‘Garde-Meuble de la Reine’, with interlaced monogram ‘MA’ and a crowned ‘CT’, branded to the desk’s underside, is evidence of this royal provenance. From 1784, the monogram ‘MA’ was branded or painted onto the queen’s personal furniture delivered to the Petit Trianon, then known as the château de Trianon. Approximately 25 pieces branded ‘CT’ and ‘Garde-Meuble de la Reine’ are known, of which seven are desks. The sober architectural lines and elegant proportions of the desk, which is embellished with delicately chased and gilded ormolu mounts, are characteristic of Marie-Antoinette’s taste. They’re also emblematic of the Neoclassical style popular in Europe throughout the 1780s, the decade in which Riesener completed many of his most important commissions for his royal patron. From June 2019 letting fees are banned in England, which means that charges including reference checks and tenancy renewals are now a thing of the past. The general rule is that landlords and letting agents can no longer charge tenants fees associated with letting.
