Photographer Douglas Kirkland remembers the night he ‘made magic’ with the film icon Marilyn Monroe — and the camera that captured it all. On a dark November evening in 1961, 27-year-old Canadian photographer Douglas Kirkland waited nervously for Marilyn Monroe in the Hollywood studio he had rented for their scheduled photo session. The fresh-faced photographer, who had made his name photographing Hollywood stars such as Elizabeth Taylor and Marlene Dietrich, had been commissioned to capture a ‘sizzling’ picture of the screen siren for Look magazine’s 25th anniversary issue. In 1961 Monroe was at the peak of her stardom. She had a string of Hollywood blockbusters to her name, including Some Like It Hot, Gentleman Prefer Blondes, Bus Stop, The Seven Year Itch and The Misfits, but her marriages to Joe DiMaggio and Arthur Miller had foundered. Aged 35, she had recently moved back to California after six years away. Kirkland had moved to New York in his early twenties to take up a position as Irving Penn’s assistant before being hired as a staff photographer at Look. He had been with the magazine for only 18 months when he was assigned his most exhilarating challenge to date. The New York-born, Massachusetts-based sculptor Jonathan Prince explains how his work reflects ‘the duality of perfection versus chaos’. ‘Sculptural works sometimes present more questions than there are answers,’ muses Jonathan Prince. We are at the sculptor’s impressive HQ in the Berkshires of Massachusetts, some 90 minutes north of New York City. ‘I’ve been up here for the last 15 years,’ he explains. On making the move from his native New York, Prince admits he initially felt quite isolated, but his feelings have changed over time. ‘I’ve really come to know that this work couldn’t be created anywhere else except surrounded by nature,’ he says. ‘It’s the quiet beauty that really informs the work.’ Prince graduated with a doctorate degree from Columbia University, and received a post-doctorate degree from the University of Southern California. He holds patents in optics and worked with NASA on its Hologlobe Project at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. The story of a very special instrument, played here by contemporary jazz star Keyon Harrold, who can be heard on the soundtrack for 'Miles Ahead', the 2015 movie about Miles Davis. Miles Davis is often referred to as ‘the Picasso of jazz’. Born and raised in Illinois, he moved to New York in 1944, where he joined the bebop quintet of his idol, the saxophonist Charlie Parker. Following a star turn at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1955, Davis was offered a long-term contract with Columbia Records. He soon went on to produce a string of critically acclaimed albums — Milestones, Porgy & Bess and Kind of Blue, to name but three. The last of those, recorded in just two sessions in 1959, remains the best-selling jazz album of all time. Davis continued to record, perform and innovate in the 1960s and early 1970s, absorbing influences from Stockhausen to soul. By 1975, however, a combination of exhaustion, personal demons and drug addiction forced him to take time out. He wouldn’t pick up a musical instrument again in earnest until the early 1980s, which was when the blue-lacquer ‘Moon and Stars’ trumpet, coming to the Exceptional Sale on 29 October at Christie’s in New York, was created for him. Studio Visit with Artist Rina Banerjee | Christie's

The Indian-born, US-based artist shares insights into her practice and shows us round her studio in Brooklyn. Rina Banerjee was born in India in 1963 but grew up in London and New York. After graduating from university in Ohio she worked as a scientist before studying for a Masters in Fine Arts at Yale in 1995. When asked why she turned to making art she observes, ‘Where else can we have the pleasure, if not in art, of exploring when we are incoherent — but are [nevertheless] saying something?’ Combining fabric, feathers, shells and all manner of organic and constructed ephemera into a conjured cosmos all her own, Banerjee evokes fairytale, fantasy and, often, a hint of dread.
