Podcast #148: Trying Not to Try With Edward Slingerland | The Art of Manliness

Have you ever noticed that when you try really hard at something, you actually aren't able to achieve what you're trying to do? For example, if you can't sleep at night, you try really hard to fall asleep, which only makes matters worse. Chinese philosophers understood this fact that when you try really hard, it makes things harder to achieve. My guest today, Edward Slingerland, has written a book called Trying Not to Try, which combines these Chinese philosophies with modern neuroscience and explores how we can live a more carefree and spontaneous life. DeLonghi La Specialista vs Sage Barista Pro - Which?

If you’re on the lookout for a coffee machine, two models that might have caught your eye are Sage’s The Barista Pro and DeLonghi’s new flagship model – La Specialista. Both are semi-automatic bean-to-cup machines, an emerging type of espresso machine that lets you tamp and extract the coffee yourself, while giving you the satisfaction of a freshly ground brew. Sage has been making this type of machine for a few years, but the recent arrival of DeLonghi’s La Specialista adds a bit of healthy competition to the mix. Podcast #147: Growth Mindset with Carol Dweck | The Art of Manliness

There are several factors that determine our success life — talent, luck, access to resources, etc. We have no control over some of them and a bit of control over the others. But there’s one factor that we have complete control over and that’s our mindset. Psychologist Dr. Carol Dweck has studied mindsets for over two decades and has discovered that there are two broad mindsets that people have that will determine their success or failure in life: a growth mindset or a fixed mindset. In her book Mindsets, she highlights and summarizes her research on these two mindsets for a general audience. Today on the podcast we discuss why we want to develop a growth mindset and the research-backed tactics on how to do it. Lots of great actionable tips in this podcast that you can implement right away. A Magnificent Chinese Gilt Bronze Bell | Christie's

This rare Qianlong-period bell was owned by one of the greatest collectors of the 20th century — William Randolph Hearst. Specialist Marco Almeida explains how and why it was made. ‘This is a magnificent example of an imperial work of art,’ states Marco Almeida, specialist in Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art at Christie’s in London. The bell was cast during the reign of the Qianlong Emperor, who reigned from 1736 to 1795 and was a renowned patron of the arts. Cast gilt-bronze bells of this type were known as 'bianzhong' and were usually assembled in sets of 16, featuring 12 musical tones, with four repeated notes in lower or higher octaves. The bells would be arranged in tonal sequence in two rows of eight on a tall lacquered wooden frame, which was often decorated at either end with a dragon motif. ‘They were an essential part of Confucian rituals at the imperial altar,’ Almeida explains. Such bells were also used during state events, including ascension ceremonies when new emperors were enthroned, formal banquets and processions of the imperial guard. -- Subscribe to Christie's YouTube: http://goo.gl/Vmh7Hf Sign up to Christie's Weekly: https://goo.gl/kc8qpV Follow Christie's on: Facebook: https://ift.tt/2elC9Zg Twitter: https://twitter.com/ChristiesInc Instagram: https://ift.tt/2iJ3lGm Pinterest: https://ift.tt/2elCafM

Podcast #146: 100 Deadly Skills with Clint Emerson | The Art of Manliness

Originally published October 2015 A little over a year ago, our fearless and talented illustrator Ted Slampyak sent me an email telling me that he wouldn’t be able to do as many projects for us because he was working on illustrating a book written by a Navy SEAL. It would teach civilians cool, Jason Bourne-esque spy skills like picking locks, using drops, evading pursuers, and even killing people with improvised weapons. When he told me about the book, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on a copy. Well, that book is now available, and it is awesome. It’s entitled 100 Deadly Skills: The SEAL Operative’s Guide to Eluding Pursuers, Evading Capture, and Surviving Any Dangerous Situation, and today on the podcast I talk to the book’s author, retired Navy SEAL Clint Emerson, about the deadly skills even civilians should know in order to protect themselves and their loved ones. Podcast #145: The Happiness Industry with Will Davies | The Art of Manliness

Originally published in October 2015. In the past ten years, there’s been an increasing emphasis on happiness in our culture. You can find countless books, blogs, and podcasts on how to have a happier life. What’s interesting is that even corporations and governments have gotten in on the game and are spending lots of time and money figuring out how to measure and increase happiness among employees and citizens. On the surface, that seems like a great thing, but my guest on today’s podcast makes a compelling case that perhaps we should be a bit wary of corporations and governments tracking and increasing our happiness, and the way they can sap our privacy and even a bit of our humanity. His name is William Davies and he’s the author of the book The Happiness Industry. Today on the podcast, William and I discuss the history of happiness tracking and some of the technology that’s coming out today that’s turning the present age into a real life Brave New World. The Tastemaker: Rita Konig | Christie's

London-based interior designer and author Rita Konig is best known in the world of interiors for her relaxed style. The best kind of rooms, she says, ‘are those that make you want to come in, sit down and stay a while’. Over the past 17 years, Konig has completed high-profile commercial and residential projects both in London and in the US. The daughter of interiors doyenne Nina Campbell, whose clients span royalty and A-list celebrities, Rita was immersed in the world of interiors from a young age. ‘I used to work in [my mother’s] shop when I was quite little, which I loved,’ she reveals. Days spent wandering around trade fairs, as well as early shopping trips with Campbell in search of china, tassels and fringes, further fuelled her interest in design. ‘I suppose that was all quite formative,’ she muses. ‘And magical. Even a sock shop in Florence was very exciting.’ While Campbell’s style is characterised by a quintessential English elegance, Konig’s is defined by a quieter charm which sees her deftly layering pattern, texture and colour to create, soft, intimate spaces. ‘For me, it’s all about being comfortable and really enjoying the place you live in,’ says Konig during our film shoot at Burghley House. ‘Ultimately, you’re trying to make the spaces really comfortable, because unless they’re comfortable you won’t go in them.’ Find out more: https://ift.tt/31QAZuX -- Subscribe to Christie's YouTube: http://goo.gl/Vmh7Hf Sign up to Christie's Weekly: https://goo.gl/kc8qpV Follow Christie's on: Facebook: https://ift.tt/2elC9Zg Twitter: https://twitter.com/ChristiesInc Instagram: https://ift.tt/2iJ3lGm Pinterest: https://ift.tt/2elCafM

What Does Art History Smell Like? | Christie's

What does a gold wreath of laurel leaves smell like? Or a Roman head from the 3rd century B.C.? Would it exude the earthy aroma of the sculptor’s workshop? These are the kind of questions Dawn Goldworm asked herself when she was invited to create a signature scent for Christie’s. The fragrance designer was presented with six works of art offered for sale during Classic Week New York (25-29 October 2019), and the challenge ‘was to find a thread that connected all the objects together while still seducing the viewer’. How To Prevent Hard Water Spots After Washing Your Car! - Chemical Guys

After Wash is an advanced drying aid that repels water, adds lubrication, and creates a streak and scratch-free shine when drying any vehicle. It’s the safest way to dry any vehicle! 95% of swirls and scratches come from poor wash and dry habits. Using After Wash after the final rinse is the best way to dry your vehicle without adding scratches or swirls. The secret to After Wash is the advanced lubrication agents that reduce friction between the paintwork and microfiber drying towel, ensuring your towel glides over the paintwork for a smooth, streak and scratch-free surface. After Wash uses hydrophobic technology to push water away from paint and quickly dry any vehicle faster than a towel alone. After Wash is formulated with synthetic sealant and gloss enhancers, adding extra protection after a wash. How To Prevent Tire Sling & Make Dressings Last! - Chemical Guys

What's up EVERYBODY! In today's episode Nick breaks down the proper steps of cleaning tires as well as enhancing them to make tire dressing last. Tire dressing is designed to enhance the deep black finish of the rubber which accents the overall look of the vehicle. Without proper preparations the dressing can sling causing a mess along the side of the vehicle and also the sought after gloss finish won't last. Nonsense All Purpose Cleaner easily cuts through years of old dressings and road grime to expose a crisp natural tire. Using a Green Workhorse Towel, Nick shows just how much filth is actually on the surface. Faded rubber and trim not only looks nasty but it is also degrading the surface. Harmful UV rays dry out plastic and rubber components giving a dull or gray finish which will crack or fail if left untreated. AoM Podcast: The Science of Mating & Dating Geoffrey Miller | The Art of Manliness

In today’s episode I talk to evolutionary psychologist Geoffrey Miller, who co-authored the book Mate: Become the Man Women Want with Tucker Max. You probably know Max from things like I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell, but these days, he’s married and has a kid, and was actually concerned that young men were using his “fratire” material as an honest-to-goodness guide to dating. He wanted to write a book that would offer sound, research-backed advice for interacting with women instead, and so teamed up with Miller to execute the idea. In this podcast, Geoffrey and I discuss some myths of dating, the traits women find attractive in men, and concrete steps men can take to increase their dating value, and have more success with women. Whether you’re married or single, this is a fascinating podcast you won’t want to miss. Podcast #141: The Science of Free Diving With James Nestor | The Art of Manliness

Originally published September 2015. When I was researching my post on how to hold your breath a few weeks ago, I came across a book called Deep: Freediving, Renegade Science, and What the Ocean Tells Us About Ourselves by James Nestor. In it, Nestor highlights the art of freediving — a competitive endeavor in which people dive down to depths of 400 feet on just a single breath. To reach that depth and make it back to the surface, freedivers have to hold their breath for 4 minutes. Blackouts are common and people have died trying to break new records. But besides these daredevil athletes, Nestor came across a group of renegade scientists who are using freediving to learn more about what’s going on in the ocean’s depths, particularly with dolphins and whales. By not using SCUBA or submarines, these scientists are getting a much closer look at these animals than we ever have before, which has put them on the brink of learning how to communicate with these fascinating creatures. It sounds New Agey, but it’s not. Today on the podcast, James and I discuss what he learned about the human body and about our connection to the ocean as he followed freedivers around the world, and we end the show by talking about his own experience learning how to freedive. https://ift.tt/1FOPIX2 http://twitter.com/artofmanliness https://ift.tt/YAd15k https://ift.tt/1DUJeqE

How To Clean & Protect Your Wheels! - Chemical Guys

Speed Wipe reduces static-cling on automotive surfaces like paintwork and glass. Normal quick detail sprays create static electricity that attracts dust, dirt, and pollen after use. Speed Wipe is engineered to repel dust by reducing static cling by up to 75%. Less static means less dust and dirt attracted to the surface, ensuring that your freshly detailed car stays pristine for longer. Light Metal Polish uses ultra-refined abrasives to restore shine to chrome, stainless steel, aluminum, billet, copper, brass, and precious metals. The easy-to-use polish works great on wheels, bumpers, exhaust tips, diamond plate, emblems, metal trim, and accents. The advanced cleaners remove light stains, oxidation, road tar, water spots, filth, and grime to reveal a show-winning shine. HydroSlick is a true ceramic coating formulated to deliver a crystal-like superior shine and incredible reflective finish, while still offering the similarity and customer familiarity of a wax! By filling in microscopic surface imperfections, HydroSlick creates a super smooth surface that reflects light back at you with unparalleled shine like only a true ceramic can. It’s so easy, you can apply as often as you want! Use HydroSlick alone as a standalone ceramic coating on untreated paint for year-round durable protection, or add it to HydroCharge or your favorite Chemical Guys ceramic coating to make the shine pop even more! ••••••••••••••• Products Used in Today's Video ••••••••••••••••• ➜ SpeedWipe: https://ift.tt/35sKu6G ➜ Light Metal Polish: https://ift.tt/2MhoKnh ➜ HydroSlick: https://ift.tt/35ELbKv •••••••••• ● Website: www.ChemicalGuys.com ● Subscribe to our channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgEcPol_nG9_aFJbB8ameLg?view_as=subscriber ● Like Us on Facebook: https://ift.tt/2ngICu5 ● Follow us on Instagram: https://ift.tt/2vjwfPB ● Visit your local Detail Garage: https://ift.tt/2X6niFY #chemicalguys #detailing #carcare

Collecting Art with Christian Levett | Christie's

Art collector Christian Levett shows us around his Mougins Museum and explains how he scratches his collecting itch. Introducing the medieval village of Mougins, a 20-minute drive from Cannes in the south of France, the British art collector Christian Levett explains that artists have been drawn to the region for centuries because of its brilliant light. Mougins is where Levett has been spending time for the last 13 years. In 2009, the investment manager from London bought a holiday home in the village, then built the Mougins Museum of Classical Art to house the thousands of Greek, Roman and Egyptian artefacts he had been fastidiously collecting for years. ‘I think I have always been a natural collector. I collected coins and First and Second World War campaign medals as a child, and as I got into my twenties, I started collecting English medieval and Roman coins, and then I started buying artworks in my mid-twenties,’ Levett explains in our film. ‘Then I discovered the antiquities market.’ It was about 20 years ago when, out of nothing but curiosity, Levett ticked the box marked ‘antiquities’ on an auction house catalogue request form. ‘It struck me as unbelievable, absolutely mind-blowing, that you could buy ancient armour and classical marble sculptures,’ he told Christie’s Magazine in 2016. ‘And it all seemed so amazingly cheap compared with practically everything else.’ Levett is the first to admit that he became fanatical about the world of antiquities. As well as acquiring Minerva (a classical archaeology magazine) and funding excavations in Egypt, Italy, England and Spain, he would also leave dozens of absentee bids at antiquities auctions – sometimes buying up to 20 lots per sale. Within a decade he had acquired more than 1,000 pieces, and soon realised he needed to invest in more infrastructure; larger storage, climate controls and a curator. The result was the Mougins Museum. Studio Visit with Artist Sara Shamma | Christie's

Syrian artist Sara Shamma invites us into her London studio to talk about her creative process, recent upheaval, and why she likes to see in double. The sun is very sharp here,’ observes Sara Shamma. ‘The way it hits your eyes is unexpected and transforms the way I see things.’ In our short film, the Syrian artist is standing in her light-filled studio in Dulwich and reflecting on how her paintings have changed since moving to South London three years ago. ‘I’ve started using blue and green in a big way – cool colours – less of the warm reds and browns that perhaps came from my country.’ In 2012, a year after the civil war began, Shamma and her young family left Damascus for Lebanon. ‘It was a difficult time,’ she says with characteristic understatement –particularly as her husband, who was CEO of a big logistics company stayed behind in Syria, intrepidly crossing the border each weekend to visit them. She put her dislocation and fear into her paintings, creating the monumental work Q, an extraordinary frieze of distended and deformed people, animals and birds waiting in line. Disturbingly Kafkaesque in appearance, it caught the attention of the press when it was exhibited at the Royal College in London in 2013 with Shami Chakrabarti saying ‘the pain is put to great effect… and proves that it is art and culture that changes the world.’ Find out more: https://ift.tt/2pE3H4R -- Subscribe to Christie's YouTube: http://goo.gl/Vmh7Hf Sign up to Christie's Weekly: https://goo.gl/kc8qpV Follow Christie's on: Facebook: https://ift.tt/2elC9Zg Twitter: https://twitter.com/ChristiesInc Instagram: https://ift.tt/2iJ3lGm Pinterest: https://ift.tt/2elCafM
