Chinese Paintings from the Chokaido Museum Collection | Christie's

Christie’s specialist Sophia Zhou looks at a group of Classical Chinese paintings from the Chokaido Museum in Japan. ‘Japan has a really long history of collecting Chinese painting,’ explains Chinese paintings specialist Sophia Zhou, introducing a group of Chinese paintings and calligraphy from the Chokaido Museum in Yokkaichi, Mie, about 100 km east of Kyoto in Japan. The roots of Japan’s visual culture stretch back to China — during the 5th century A.D. Japan inherited China’s system of writing, then in the 6th century Chinese Buddhism and its art reached Japan’s shores. Over the centuries the influence of Chinese art slowly waned in Japan, but collecting Chinese paintings and calligraphy remained popular, particularly between the 12th and 14th centuries, and then again during the 19th and 20th centuries. The Chokaido Collection was assembled by a Japanese politician and industrialist named Yamamoto Teijiro (1870-1937), who consulted with numerous scholars and sourced works through collectors whom he visited in Fujian, Hangzhou, Suzhou, Shanghai, Guangdong, Beijing and Shandong. Once made up of around 2,000 Classical Chinese paintings, the collection still houses ‘some of the finest painting and calligraphy today,’ says Zhou. How To Restore Faded Paint! - Nooners With Nick Ep.5 | Chemical Guys

We've all seen vehicles that have chalky, dull paint which is caused by years of abuse from UV rays and harsh elements but how do you reverse this damage? In today's Nooners, Nick demonstrates how to breath life into old paint. This 1986 Land Rover Defender has been retired from the military for years but it has spent the last decade outdoors and neglected. Machine polishing is the most effective means of restoring shine, even to this rugged and tough truck. Utilizing the TORQ 15DA Polisher with an Orange Hex-Logic Pad and VSS to remove the failing outer layer of clear coat to reveal a deep olive green finish. Collecting Vietnamese Art with Dr Tuan Pham | Christie's

We meet Dr Tuan Pham, the San Diego-based collector who assembled a collection of Vietnamese art in order to reconnect with his homeland. For the American-Vietnamese collector Dr Tuan Pham, collecting Vietnamese art has been an educational and emotional adventure. ‘Vietnamese art is really about history and culture,’ he explains. ‘It tells you a story that you didn’t know before.’ The collector’s interest in the art from his homeland was sparked by a chance encounter in the late 1990s. ‘I just happened to walk by a gallery [in South Florida], and as I approached the painting, I saw that it was signed in Chinese characters above the name Le Pho,’ Pham explains. He purchased the painting without realising that the artist Le Pho was in fact from Vietnam. ‘It was the first painting in my Vietnamese collection, and it started a personal journey that reconnects me with my birthplace,’ he says. Pham was born in Vietnam, but fled to the United States in 1975 as a 13-year-old refugee, escaping with his brother. Later, he moved from Florida to California where he met his wife, and in 1992 he founded Phamatech, a biotechnology company and laboratory that’s based in San Diego. ‘So many [20th-century Vietnamese] artists grew up in Vietnam, but left Vietnam for France and made a career out of that,’ Pham explains. ‘I did the same thing. There’s always been a Vietnamese part of me and an American part of me, and this blending of the two cultures is similar to what I see in some of the artists’ work that I collect. It’s why I have enjoyed the [collecting] journey so much.’ Find out more: http://bit.ly/2wge6nl -- Subscribe to Christie's YouTube: http://goo.gl/Vmh7Hf Sign up to Christie's Weekly: https://goo.gl/kc8qpV Follow Christie's on: Facebook: http://bit.ly/2elC9Zg Twitter: https://twitter.com/ChristiesInc Instagram: http://bit.ly/2iJ3lGm Pinterest: http://bit.ly/2elCafM

The Dodo: A Bird with a Message | Christie's

Broadcaster Liz Bonnin and specialist James Hyslop are moved by a rare dodo skeleton — ‘this isn’t just a rare and intriguing curiosity, but represents what humans are doing to animal life on the planet’. Standing 64 cm high (just over 2 feet), with brownish-grey feathers, a tufty white tail, yellow feet and a large black and green beak, the dodo was a strange-looking bird that lived on the island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. It was, curiously, a larger relative of the pigeon. The first recorded contact between humans and a dodo dates to 1598, when Dutch sailors ventured ashore on the tropical island. Within less than a century of this initial encounter, the dodo had become extinct. ‘I suppose we could be forgiven for thinking, “Well, that is just a bird waiting to become extinct”,’ says the natural history broadcaster Liz Bonnin. Yet the bird’s reputation for being fat and clumsy is unfair; in fact it was perfectly suited to its environment. In reality, the dodo’s inability to fly was an energy-saving adaptation. And as Bonnin says, the island lacked natural ground predators: ‘Everything was rosy’. Dodos thrived on Mauritius. ‘It lived, as far as we can tell, right from the coast up to the highest mountain peaks,’ explains James Hyslop, Head of the Science and Natural History department at Christie’s. So why did the dodo become extinct so quickly? ‘The portrayal of it as a gullible little animal that sailors clubbed... probably isn’t the whole story,’ reveals Hyslop. ‘It’s much more likely that introduced predation by rats or other animals is what really [drove] the final nail in the coffin.’ Find out more: http://bit.ly/2WnaONK -- Subscribe to Christie's YouTube: http://goo.gl/Vmh7Hf Sign up to Christie's Weekly: https://goo.gl/kc8qpV Follow Christie's on: Facebook: http://bit.ly/2elC9Zg Twitter: https://twitter.com/ChristiesInc Instagram: http://bit.ly/2iJ3lGm Pinterest: http://bit.ly/2elCafM

How To Remove Dried Dead Bugs from Dirty Car! | Chemical Guys

Long road trips bring us to new destinations with new experience but along those many miles your car is exposed to high speeds and bugs have no time to get out of your way. Bug guts splatter along the windshield, hood and bumper of your care and if left untreated the acidic guts of bugs can permanently stain and etch paintwork and glass. This Jeep Grand Cherokee was driven many miles through open highway which left it riddled with layers of dirt, road filth and bug guts which if left untreated will ruin the finish of the paint and cause permanent damage. This Jeep Track Hawk is covered in dried bug guts. Using Bug & Tar Wash with an Ultimate Chenille Microfiber Two Sided Wash Sponge to gently scrub the area, Hector safely removes the staining before it can permanently damage the paint. #chemicalguys #detailing #carcare -------------------------- Products Used in Today's Video -------------------------- ➜ Bug & Tar Wash: http://bit.ly/2VWwMrT ➜ Citrus Wash & Gloss: http://bit.ly/2HFwzz3 ➜ Dirt Trap: http://bit.ly/2VHIq5E ➜ Water-Proof Three Way Wash Mitt: http://bit.ly/2HA7W6M ➜ Big Mouth Foam Cannon: http://bit.ly/2VOvc6U ➜ Snubby Foam Cannon Attachment: http://bit.ly/2J8kIwT • •• •• •• •• •• •• •• •• •• • ● Website: www.ChemicalGuys.com ● Subscribe to our channel: https://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=chemicalguys ● Subscribe to our newsletter: http://bit.ly/2vjCz9T ● Like Us on Facebook: http://bit.ly/2uJzRxo ● Follow us on Instagram: http://bit.ly/2vjwfPB

The Michael Scharf Family Collection of The Stieglitz Circle | Christie's

Specialists Eric Widing and Paige Kestenman look at highlights from The Michael Scharf Family Collection. In 1908, a small exhibition of Auguste Rodin’s nude drawings opened in Manhattan. Organised by Alfred Stieglitz (1864-1946), photographer, editor, and proselytiser of the European avant-garde, it was one of several subsequent exhibitions designed to expose the bewildered American public to new ideas in modern art. The show shocked society, and according to the Mexican artist Marius de Zayas it took another 11 years of ‘hard labour’ to convince the city that artists such as Cézanne, Picasso and Matisse had merit. Much of that was down to Stieglitz, who tirelessly promoted both European and American artists at his Manhattan galleries, first at the Little Galleries of the Photo-Secession (colloquially known as ‘291’), then at The Intimate Gallery, and finally at An American Place. Today, Stieglitz is regarded as a visionary protagonist in the birth of American modern art, and on 22 May in New York a comprehensive array of early, primarily abstract works by the American artists he promoted and who became members of his circle will be offered from The Michael Scharf Family Collection. These artists were often influenced by their contemporaries in Europe, and yet succeeded in creating a new and distinctly American genre. Studio Visit with Olga de Amaral | Christie's

A conversation with the Colombian artist in her studio in Bogotá, in which she talks candidly about her emotional relationship with light, colour and space. The career of pioneering Colombian artist Olga de Amaral dates back to the 1950s, when she began making abstract sculptures out of textiles. She has continued to produce shimmering variations of these pieces ever since. In some cases, they hang against a wall; in others, they hang from the ceiling in the middle of a room, as installations to be walked around. They are all created by the painting and weaving of myriad threads — and since the 1980s, de Amaral has been applying gold and silver leaf, too. The majority of de Amaral’s contemporary works are composed of linen, gold, paper and gesso. ‘All my things have to have those four elements,’ she explains from her spacious studio. ‘But if I were to make all these things myself, it would take me forever.’ The artist has enlisted the help of a dedicated team: ‘My helpers are wonderful, very sensitive,’ she says with a warm smile. ‘They love what they do.’ Find out more: http://bit.ly/30raHQG -- Subscribe to Christie's YouTube: http://goo.gl/Vmh7Hf Sign up to Christie's Weekly: https://goo.gl/kc8qpV Follow Christie's on: Facebook: http://bit.ly/2elC9Zg Twitter: https://twitter.com/ChristiesInc Instagram: http://bit.ly/2iJ3lGm Pinterest: http://bit.ly/2elCafM

How Robert Rauschenberg ‘Rewrote the Rules of the Game’ | 'Buffalo II' | Christie's

Photographer Chris Rauschenberg, son of Robert Rauschenberg, on his father’s desire to ‘talk about the world in all its complexity’ with Buffalo II. 1964 was a year of socio-political, technological and cultural change in America: the nation mourned the murder of President John F. Kennedy; Lyndon Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act; and The Beatles led the ‘British Invasion’ of the American pop market. But 1964 also marked a pivotal moment in the canon of post-war American art. In a large, lofty studio above a billiard hall on Broadway in New York, Robert Rauschenberg (1925-2008) was finalising Buffalo II, one of the largest in his celebrated series of silkscreen paintings that captured the social, political and artistic zeitgeist of the decade. ‘Buffalo II is emblematic of the moment of its creation,’ states Chris Rauschenberg, the late artist’s son. It is also a work that represents an important moment in his father’s career — the series he made between 1962 and 1964 saw Rauschenberg challenge preconceived notions of what art could be. Maharajas & Mughal Magnificence — A Collection of Extraordinary Treasures | Christie's

Rahul Kadakia, Christie’s International Head of Jewellery, introduces some of the many storied pieces from an incredible collection of royal jewels and jewelled objects that’s set to make auction history. ‘This is living history in your hand,’ says Rahul Kadakia, International Head of Jewellery at Christie’s, of a stunning trove of jewels that date back nearly 500 years to the early part of the Mughal dynasty, which ruled in India from 1526 to 1857. India’s rich culture of jewellery is partly the result of natural circumstance. The mines of Golconda yielded the highest grade of diamonds; Kashmir produced the rarest and most beautiful sapphires; while the greatest emeralds arrived in India from Colombia through commercial exchange via the Portuguese-controlled ports of Goa. Jewellery in the Mughal tradition was an integral aspect of articulating authority, with eyewitness accounts from the height of the Mughal Empire revealing the extent to which rulers valued gems for their rarity, physical properties and provenance.
