Alive with the charisma of both artist and sitter, 'MP' depicts Michael Patterson, a friend from the vibrant nightlife scene of 1980s New York. The two were regulars at Area, a short-lived Tribeca club infamous for its themed parties and extravagant, theatrical sets. . Basquiat deejayed and sometimes even painted there; his then-girlfriend Jennifer Goode, whose brothers Eric and Chris co-owned the club, was one of its art directors. . 'The silver bar is where worlds collide', wrote Jesse Kornbluth in a 1985 profile. 'Andy Warhol might be brushing up against Malcolm Forbes, Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat against David Byrne or Giorgio Armani, Scavullo and Joan Rivers against Phoebe Cates or Henry Geldzahler. And if no one’s mixing, Stephen Saban, the Boswell of the night, will push them together, later to remind them what happened in his column in Details’. . Patterson recalls that he didn’t take Basquiat seriously when he first asked him to sit for a portrait. He saw Basquiat again at Area two weeks later, and the artist asked why he hadn’t showed up. Peter Doig’s Boiler House: On Memory, Decay, and Displacement | Christie's

In 1991, the Scottish artist Peter Doig (b. 1959) visited Le Corbusier’s Unité d’Habitation in northeast France, a utopian housing project that had opened in 1961 in Briey-en-Fôret, then been abandoned. To Doig, the project was a temple of hope laid to ruin, and the nine large-scale canvases it inspired — Doig’s seminal ‘Concrete Cabins’ series, the largest and most distinctive cycle in Doig’s oeuvre — became a meditation on the decay of Le Corbusier’s modernist vision of social cohesion. Boiler House was first exhibited in Salzburg after Doig had won the Eliette von Karajan prize in 1994, and was included in Doig’s 2008 retrospective at Tate Britain. It stands alone within the cycle, an isolated building in the forest. Depicting the building designed to house the estate’s coal boiler, it is rendered in fluid trails of impasto, and carries a stark anthropomorphic charge, the angular geometries looming large through a screen of trees, shifting in and out of focus like a memory or fragments from a movie reel. 'Holding Hands' by Artist STIK Installed in London as a Sign of Love and Unity

Created over three years by STIK, the 12-foot-high bronze depicts two of his ageless, genderless and raceless figures joined hand in hand. Feet firmly rooted in the park’s grass, with space for visitors to pass between their legs, one looks westwards towards the city centre, while the other gazes east across the treetops. The work’s theme is clear: love and unity in an era when social distancing and stormy politics are pulling us apart. And its timing couldn’t be more poignant as attitudes towards inclusivity in public statues evolve. On 23 October, Christie’s in London is offering the original, unique bronze maquette for the monumental sculpture, with the proceeds set to fund a socially inclusive programme of outdoor art across the borough of Hackney. Gathered over the course of thirty years by New York collector W. M. Hunt, The Unseen Eye includes works by 20th century masters including Diane Arbus, Richard Avedon, Lee Friedlander, William Klein, Robert Mapplethorpe, and Robert Frank, as well as lesser-known photographers and vernacular images. Hunt’s collecting impulse, honed over decades, led to a rich picture of humanity, from birth (Diane Arbus’s portrait of Anderson Cooper as a toddler) to death (Frederick Evan’s death mask of Beethoven, as a platinum print.) W. M. Hunt is a frequent lecturer on the art of collecting and an adjunct professor at the School of Visual Arts, New York.
