Art of Manliness Podcast #78: Don't Follow Your Passion with Cal Newport| The Art of Manliness
In today’s episode I talk to Cal Newport, author of the book So Good They Can’t Ignore Ignore You: Why Skills Trump Passion in the Quest for Work You Love. In his book Cal makes that provocative case that “following your passion” is terrible career advice and can actually cause people needless anxiety and problems in their lives. Instead of “following your passion,” Cal argues that seeking mastery in your job is the starting step to cultivating work you love. Show Highlights How following your passion can lead to anxiety and misery What the research says on what makes work fulfilling (hint: it’s not following your passion) The difference between the craftsman mindset and passion mindset Why your focus should be on developing “career capital” and not following your passion Why you need autonomy in your work to be happy (and how you can get it) And much more! Art of Manliness Podcast #77: Mindwise the Juliana Schroeder
In today’s episode I talk to Juliana Schroeder, PhD candidate at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, about our brain’s evolved ability to read the minds of others. This mind-reading ability of ours is what makes social interaction possible. For example, it’s how we figure out if someone is angry at us even if they don’t explicitly say they’re steamed. Her research with Nicholas Epley, author of Mindwise: How We Understand What Others Think, Believe, Feel, and Want, has uncovered some fascinating insights about the human mind. Juliana and I discuss some of those insights today. Show Highlights: How we’re evolved to read the minds of others How we still make mistakes and cognitive errors when trying to read the minds of others How increased status makes us dehumanize or see others as mindless boobs (and how we can prevent increased status from turning us into jerks) Why we pretend like a person standing right next to us in a subway train isn’t really there (and why we should actually try striking up a conversation with that person) Why “walk a mile in the shoes of another” to understand someone else’s perspective is actually terrible advice How we’re terrible at reading our own minds And much more! Google Home vs Amazon Echo (2nd generation) - Smart hub challenge
We put the Google Home smart home hub head-to-head with the Amazon Echo (2nd generation) to find out which is best at understanding international accents. The Google Home has a built-in voice-controlled helper called Google Assistant, while the Amazon Echo second-generation has one called Alexa. Both voice assistants can give information, answer questions and control smart gadgets, as well as play music. The verdict? It was very close but ultimately the Google Home performed better than the Amazon Echo when it came to understanding a range of commands from users from Germany, Singapore and Italy. How To Maintain Your Bike! - Chemical Guys
In today's video, Nick cleans and brings out the factory shine of this Triumph T100. Every detail starts with a wash, but small crevices and hard to reach areas make it difficult to though dry after washing, no need to fear when using Moto Full Cycle Waterless Wash & Wax. When trying to wash your bike you may choose to avoid water because of the implications that free running water can have on motorcycle components. Scratches and swirls are inevitable especially on black and dark color paint. The gas tank of this bike is riddled with swirls so a quick hand polish with Rebound Scratch & Swirl Remover restores an almost like new appearance. Lastly, is the protection stage. UV rays beat down on the sensitive vinyl, rubber and plastic components which can cause discoloration and cracking over time without proper care. Using Moto Protectant to nourish these surfaces restores a deep gloss while remaining dry to the touch. ***NEVER dress motorcycle tires!!!*** •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• ➜ Moto Line - Full Cycle Waterless Wash and Wax https://ift.tt/2IRQCxJ ➜ Moto Line, Rebound Scratch & Swirl Remover https://ift.tt/2IU9IiB ➜ Moto Armor https://ift.tt/2LCpwZ6 •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Visit your local Detail Garage for your favorite products and helpful advise! ● https://ift.tt/2jS6ww4... ● Website: www.ChemicalGuys.com ● Subscribe to our channel: https://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=chemicalguys ● Subscribe to our newsletter: https://ift.tt/2vjCz9T ● Like Us on Facebook: https://ift.tt/2uJzRxo ● Follow us on Instagram: https://ift.tt/2vjwfPB

How To Prepare For Car Show! - | BIMMERFEST | - Chemical Guys
Car shows are an exciting event to show off your pride and joy as well as meet fellow car enthusiasts but to truly showcase the pristine finish of your ride you want it to look its best. In today's video, Nick cares for this modified BMW 328i to get ready for the weekend shows. The Estoril Blue finish is blanketed in a combination coat of dust, road debris and droppings from bees and birds which all really take away from the overall look of the vehicle. Using Extreme Slick Synthetic Quick Detail Spray, we gently and safely remove the abrasive particles of filth in tandem with one of our favorite microfiber towels, the Workhorse! For added shine plus the added benefit of paint protection we spray a fine coat of Blazin' Banana Spray Wax. Ensure that your vehicle is protected by providing a durable protection against the road’s toughest debris by using Blazin' Banana. To put the final touch on this quick detail we clean the glass using Glass Only to rapidly remove stubborn film & haze from windows and mirrors, leaving an ultra-clear, streak-free crystal clear glass. Morphy Richards Mico toastie vs Breville Deep Fill - Sandwich Toaster Challenge
We put the new Morphy Richards Mico toastie head-to-head with the classic Breville deep fill toastie maker to see which one makes the best cheese toastie. The Mico Toastie uses new technology to convert microwaves into conventional heat, to give the toastie an oven-grilled effect, despite cooking in the microwave. Breville have been producing toastie makers since the 70s and their deep fill sandwich maker boasts Cut and Seal technology, to help shape the bread into a neat sandwich shape. The verdict? The Mico is really easy to use, and leaves barely any mess as it is completely dishwashable. The toastie was well cooked through with delicious crispy bread. The Breville leaves more mess and leaked quite a bit of cheese, but the resulting toastie was delightfully gooey and cheesy. We found no overall winner as each had their strengths and we think it’s a matter of personal taste. Top Car Interior Detailing Tips & Techniques! - Chemical Guys
Today in the Detail Garage, Jen is wrapping up the detail on her Honda S2000 by cleaning and protecting the interior. Interior surfaces are constantly exposed to grime, body oils, food spills and UV rays...being that it is a convertible! Starting with a vacuum to remove the loose debris and dust that is trapped in the fiber of the carpet. Next, Jen uses Total Interior to "totally" clean the interior. Use it on any surface inside of the vehicle to clean and protect the sensitive plastic, leather and vinyl components from harmful UV rays without adding any oily dressings that cause glare and attract dust. Chemical Guys Leather Cleaner and Leather Conditioner is a great way to restore and maintain the leather upholstery of your ride. Spraying Leather Cleaner directly onto the surface loosens grime then using a Horse Hair Detailing Brush, agitate the cleaner to lift stubborn stains. After thoroughly drying the freshly cleaned leather, apply Leather Conditioner to revive that leather scent, soft leather feel and protect against future damage. •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• ➜ Total Interior Cleaner & Protectant https://ift.tt/2KLdE61 ➜ Leather Cleaner & Leather Conditioner Kit https://ift.tt/2rYsy1F ➜ Lightning Fast Stain Extractor https://ift.tt/2IB8KYr ➜ Workhorse Microfiber Towel, Tan https://ift.tt/2upJwtG •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Visit your local Detail Garage for your favorite products and helpful advise! ● https://ift.tt/2jS6ww4... ● Website: www.ChemicalGuys.com ● Subscribe to our channel: https://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=chemicalguys ● Subscribe to our newsletter: https://ift.tt/2vjCz9T ● Like Us on Facebook: https://ift.tt/2uJzRxo ● Follow us on Instagram: https://ift.tt/2vjwfPB
The Iconoclastic Heiress | Constantin Brancusi’s 'La jeune fille sophistiquée'
This unique sculpture by Constantin Brancusi is a portrait of heiress Nancy Cunard. An extraordinarily rare and important work, it is the only existing example in brass of Brancusi’s stylised portrait of the Anglo-American heiress and writer Nancy Cunard. The work (estimate on request) retains the artist’s original hand-carved marble base — a factor of immense significance given the importance Brancusi attached to materials, and the interplay between his sculptures and the pedestals upon which he placed them. Art of Manliness Podcast #74: Roman Honor with Carlin Barton | The Art of Manliness
Originally published June 2014. In this week’s episode I talk to University of Massachusetts’ professor of ancient history Carlin Barton about her book Roman Honor: The Fire in the Bones. I discovered her book after I finished our massive series on the origins and decline of traditional honor in the West and I wished I had it as a source during my research. It’s one of the best books I’ve read, and every time I re-read it, I’ve gotten new insights. Professor Barton and I have a 90-minute conversation about honor and the role it played in the lives of the Romans. Show highlights: What honor meant for the ancient Romans (and how it’s completely different from our modern concept of honor) Why actions and exerting the “will” on the world was an important part of Roman honor The difference between a “male” and a “man” to ancient Romans and how a male gained the status of a man The role male expandability played in the Roman concept of manliness How the Romans handled defeat How Romans found wearing a psychological “mask” liberating Why honor declined and philosophies like Stoicism took their place in Ancient Rome What lessons us moderns can take from the Roman concept of honor And much more! Best Car Wash Techniques and Tips - Detailing a Used Car - Chemical Guys
What's up guys?! In today's video, Jen is back to show you her "NEW" car and what it is going to take to restore a factory finish. With any detail it is recommended to start with a wash and this ride is no different. Beginning with the wheels, Jen tackles the task ahead of bringing out the shine of her car. With any detail it is recommended to begin with the dirtiest area and that is almost always the wheels. Brake dust, road debris and old dressing dull the finish of wheels and tires and can actually damage them permanently if left untreated. Using a combination of Diablo Wheel Gel and Sticky Citrus Gel, Jen safely cuts through the grime that is covering these wheels. Moving to the body, we decide to start fresh using Clean Slate! Old glaze, sealant and wax will hide the true condition of the paintwork but Clean Slate strips all of that without harming the paint. Once the vehicle has been rinsed it is ready to be dried. To prevent water spots, Jen uses After Wash which is a drying aide that breaks the surface tension between the water droplets and the paint making them roll right off. *Stay tuned for the rest of the detailing process series!* •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• ➜ TORQ Professional Foam Cannon Snow Foamer https://ift.tt/2rwpMjm ➜ Chenille Premium Microfiber Wash Mitt https://ift.tt/2bc40Mj ➜ Heavy Duty Detailing Bucket https://ift.tt/2jiIytH ➜ Dirt Trap https://ift.tt/2uJDljt ➜ Clean Slate Surface Cleanser Wash https://ift.tt/2ryzOjN ➜ Diablo Wheel Gel https://ift.tt/2HWHeod ➜ Sticky Citrus Wheel Gel https://ift.tt/2rwCazH ➜ Extended Reach Wheel Gerbils Wheel and Rim Brushes https://ift.tt/2KN5Oti ➜ Easy Reach Wheel and Rim Detailing Brush https://ift.tt/2rwZ89P ➜ Gray Matter Waffle Weave Towel https://ift.tt/2I2ApW1 ➜ After Wash Drying Aide https://ift.tt/2yC8es1 •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Visit your local Detail Garage for your favorite products and helpful advise! ● https://ift.tt/2jS6ww4... ● Website: www.ChemicalGuys.com ● Subscribe to our channel: https://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=chemicalguys ● Subscribe to our newsletter: https://ift.tt/2vjCz9T ● Like Us on Facebook: https://ift.tt/2uJzRxo ● Follow us on Instagram: https://ift.tt/2vjwfPB

‘War Is In the Paintings I Have Done’ | Pablo Picasso’s 'Le Marin'
Loic Gouzer and Max Carter tell the story of Pablo Picasso’s 1943 masterpiece. Executed in 1943, at the height of the Occupation, Le Marin offers one of the most profound and revealing views into Pablo Picasso’s wartime psyche. ‘From the depth and power of expression to his striped Breton shirt, Le Marin is an extraordinarily vivid portrait of the artist,’ confirms Adrien Meyer, Co-Chairman, Impressionist and Modern Art, Christie’s New York. ‘Painted at both Picasso’s and Western civilisation’s lowest ebb, this is art history and 20th-century history writ large. The fact that Le Marin once inhabited the legendary collection of Victor and Sally Ganz makes this picture all the more exceptional.’ Find out more: https://ift.tt/2rxsvZP

Hilary Spurling on Henri Matisse's 'Odalisque couchée aux magnolias'
Hilary Spurling, author of an acclaimed biography of Henri Matisse, discusses the superlative 'Odalisque couchée aux magnolias' from The Collection of Peggy and David Rockefeller, and the pivotal role of model Henriette Darricarrère. ‘This was a completely new way of painting,’ says Henri Matisse’s biographer, Hilary Spurling. The author is referring to the French master’s Odalisque couchée aux magnolias, from 1923. Depicting his favourite model, Henriette Darricarrère, in sensual repose, it was executed in his studio in Nice, which consisted of ‘two rooms furnished more or less entirely from junk shops,’ Spurling says. ‘Matisse would pick up screens and fabrics [for use] as props, costumes and backdrops in his paintings. All these elements become part of the texture of a picture — people just hadn’t painted that way before.’ More often than not, the elements were radiantly coloured, and in the case of Odalisque couchée aux magnolias, they included the floral screen behind Darricarrère and the striped, green cover of the chaise longue on which she reclines. Art of Manliness Podcast #58: The Science of Flow with Steven Kotler | The Art of Manliness
Originally published February 2014 In this episode of the AoM podcast, I talk to science journalist Steven Kotler about his new book The Rise of Superman: Decoding the Science of Ultimate Human Performance. In his book, Steven takes a look at the world of extreme athletes and discovers that these so-called adrenaline junkies are truly pushing the boundaries of human performance, and that it actually isn’t the adrenaline that’s driving their advances. Rather, it’s the concept of flow — an optimal state of attention that slows down time and makes life-or-death decision-making possible. In The Rise of Superman, Steven gives examples of extreme athletes — like big wave surfers, solo rock climbers, and base jumpers — who are tapping into flow to do the seemingly impossible. What’s more, he shares research-backed ways that Average Joes can hack their own flow so that they can improve their performance across all facets of life and truly flourish. Show highlights: What exactly is flow? How flow changes our perception of time. How flow saved a base jumper from falling to his death. How you can “hack your flow” and become the best man you can be. And much more! Art of Manliness Podcast #38: Nick Offerman | The Art of Manliness
Originally published November 2011. If you’ve been following the site, you know Kate and I are big fans of NBC’s Parks and Recreation. We’re especially fans of the character Ron Swanson on the show. Ron Swanson is the head of the Pawnee Parks and Rec Dept. in Indiana. He’s a conservative libertarian who loves woodworking, breakfast foods, hunting, and fishing, and he keeps a sawed off shotgun in his desk. His Pyramid of Greatness is pure awesome. While Ron’s idiosyncrasies bring humor to the show (as all the characters’ quirks do), his manly ways aren’t mocked for laughs in the way of other tv shows. The show has a sort of sweet, good-natured tone, which is why we like it. What’s interesting is that the actor behind the character, Nick Offerman, is pretty manly in real life, too. Nick’s real passion is woodworking; he runs his own woodshop–the Offerman Shop–where he builds tables, chairs, canoes, paddles and more. A Guide to the Symbolism of Chinese Ceramic Decoration
Peonies, jasmine, chrysanthemums and other flowers are loaded with meaning in Chinese art. Chinese porcelain has been decorated with a huge variety of motifs in the years since the first recognisable shapes appeared on painted pottery in the Neolithic period. Since the Song dynasty (960-1279) flowers have been among the most popular decorative themes. This was particularly true on 18th-century enamelled porcelains. The choice of designs was based not only on their beauty, but also on what the motifs represented. ‘Throughout Chinese history, symbolism has been integral to its artwork,’ says Katie Lundie, Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art Specialist at Christie’s in London. ‘These links are often very playful.’ Find out more: https://ift.tt/2JQLaaf
