Paul Maenz: ‘Art Keeps the Power of Imagination Alive’

The influential German gallerist Paul Maenz discusses working with artists Keith Haring, Albert Oehlen and Anselm Kiefer. Across a long and successful career, Paul Maenz stressed that the real purpose of an art gallery should be to serve art in the purest form possible. ‘Its nature is related to the nature of art itself, and that means change,’ he would explain. Born in 1939 in Gelsenkirchen, Germany, Maenz would become an important gallerist, introducing new waves of avant-garde artists to European and American audiences in the 1970s and ’80s. Operating during a time of rapid change in the art world, his Cologne gallery was instrumental in establishing the city as a centre of cultural innovation. Working closely with artists, curators and critics, Maenz gave voice to pioneering movements of the time, such as Conceptualism, Italian Transavanguardia and Neo-Expressionism. In today's video, Joseph, Hector and Nick discuss California's diverse car culture focusing on an LA based passion, lowriding! Cruising "low and slow" is an opportunity for man to show off his creation on a public pedestal, specifically the streets of Los Angeles. Southern California is famous for beautiful weather, diverse culture and custom cars. To many enthusiasts, cars are much more than a form of transportation, they are a way of life and part of the family. Lowriders are works of art that feature custom wheels, an altered suspension to raise and lower the vehicle, aftermarket sound systems, intricate paint schemes that complement the curves and lines of a particular ride. Murals, graphics and portraits illustrate the care takers heritage and imagination, bringing their vision to fruition. How to get a mortgage if you're self employed

Find out how to improve your chances of getting a mortgage if you're buying a home as a contractor or freelancer. When you apply for a mortgage, the provider will look at how much you earn, your expenses and how secure your income is. They usually do this by taking an average of what you’ve made in recent years, to work out how much to lend you. You’ll need to show evidence of your expenses and operating costs. Because a contractor mortgage application is usually more complicated, you may be referred to an underwriter to assess your situation. So it’s important to speak to a mortgage broker, who can advise on the lenders most likely to give you a mortgage. 'Designed to Impress and Overwhelm' | A 3,000-year-old Assyrian Relief

International Head of Antiquities G. Max Bernheimer marvels at this powerful stone relief retrieved from Nimrud in modern-day Iraq in the mid-19th century. Standing more than 7 ft. high, this proud figure was once part of an elaborate decorative scheme that covered the walls of the Northwest Palace at Nimrud, which was constructed some 3,000 years ago. The palace — at 120m by 200m, one of the largest known in antiquity — was commissioned by King Ashurnasirpal II, who reigned from 883-859 BC. Ashurnasirpal was a tyrant who ruthlessly expanded his kingdom, conquering much of the ancient Near East including modern-day Syria and the land between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers — an area referred to today as ‘the cradle of civilisation’. The palace reflected Ashurnasirpal’s newfound status as the most powerful ruler of the largest empire ever seen. This superbly preserved frieze was acquired in Mosul in 1859 by an American missionary named Dr Henri Byron Haskell from the English archaeologist Sir Austen Henry Layard, who had unearthed the royal palace at Nimrud with permission from the Ottoman authorities. In addition to this relief, which has been housed at the Virginia Theological Seminary since its crossing of the Atlantic, Haskell also sent five others to Bowdoin College in Maine and another, which is now housed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Around 60 other museums around the world contain reliefs from Ashurnasirpal’s palace, including the British Museum, the Brooklyn Museum and the Yale University Art Gallery. The relief offered at Christie’s on 31 October will be sold on behalf of the Virginia Theological Seminary to underwrite a scholarship fund. Find out more: https://ift.tt/2I42adD

Journey to the New: The Collection of Harry W. and Mary Margaret Anderson

The couple’s passion for contemporary art embraced such artists as David Hockney, Roy Lichtenstein, Alexander Calder and David Smith. Harry ‘Hunk’ and Margaret ‘Moo’ Anderson and their daughter Mary Patricia ‘Putter’ Anderson would go on to create one of the most celebrated collections of post-war and contemporary art in America, employing what they called a ‘head and hands’ approach to collecting. ‘They strived to ensure that each object had a balance of the “head” — the idea, concept and ingenuity — and the “hands”: the craftsmanship and materials,’ explains Jason Linetzky, Director of the Anderson Collection at Stanford University. ‘These two principles guided the Andersons in growing their collection over many decades.’ Find out more: https://ift.tt/2D9Kqi3

Who Was Su Shi?

Who was Su Shi, and why is he so revered within Chinese culture? Art critic Alastair Sooke and Christie’s specialist Sophia Zhou look at the life and times of this giant of Chinese culture, and reflect on his revolutionary ideas about what painting could be. ‘During the Song dynasty, a period of unsurpassed refinement in the arts in China, Su Shi had a brilliant and staggeringly varied career,’ explains art critic Alastair Sooke. A poet, politician, writer, calligrapher, painter and aesthetic theorist, Su Shi was the pre-eminent scholar of the Song dynasty. ‘He was so prolific in so many different fields that it is very tempting to think of him as a proto-Renaissance man,’ says Sooke, ‘even though he was born four centuries before Leonardo.’ In order to appreciate Su Shi’s pre-eminent place within Chinese culture, it is important to understand the period and society in which he lived. The Song dynasty (960-1279) was a key turning point in Chinese history — a period that witnessed an explosion in population, significant increases in the empire’s economic capacity and power, and rising levels of education. ‘The Song dynasty was also the peak of artistic achievement in the history of Chinese art,’ points out Chinese Paintings specialist Sophia Zhou. How can parents help first-time buyers?

Top tips for parents looking to help first-time buyers by contributing to their deposit or acting as a guarantor for their mortgage. If you want to help your child buy a home but don't have enough savings to give or lend them the cash for a deposit, there are several options you can consider... 1) Guarantor mortgages Some guarantor mortgages allow you to use your own home or savings instead of a cash deposit for your child. On the downside, this means you could be liable to meet repayments if your child can’t. 2) Joint mortgages A joint mortgage considers both your and your child’s income, as well as any money outstanding on your own mortgage. Be careful, if you’re on the property deeds you’ll have to pay extra stamp duty and if you’re named on the mortgage, you’re equally responsible for paying it. 3) Remortgaging If you have a mortgage on your own property, one option is to free up some cash by remortgaging. This would involve arranging a new mortgage with your existing provider or transferring to another lender. It’s important to think about what would happen if you needed the money back. How to get DAB radio in your car - Which? guide

Don’t have a digital radio in your car? Follow our guide to get DAB radio in any car ahead of the digital radio switchover. If you have an older FM or AM radio in your car, there are four main ways to maintain in-car access to your favourite national radio stations... 1) Plug-in-and-play devices These devices are arguably the simplest way to get digital radio, but can make your car interior look ugly, with lots of visible wires. They usually plug into your cigarette lighter socket for power, and good ones typically cost £60-£100. 2) Digital radio conversion kit This approach uses the same technology as plug-in-and-play solutions, converting the digital signal to FM. However, they look far better, with only a new antenna visible. But they are complicated to install, and need to be put in by a trained professional, which increases the cost. 3) Replacement radio This is generally not possible with more modern cars, as dashboards now vary greatly in design. But if you have a car more than 10 years old, it could be relatively easy to take out your existing radio and replace it with a new stereo. 4) Use your smartphone You can use apps on your smartphone, such as TuneIn Radio, to listen to DAB and internet radio. You can connect your phone through your car’s aux-in if it has one, or through a separate Bluetooth car kit. But this can be a very costly solution, as it counts against your smartphone’s data allowance. For more top tips and expert advice visit https://ift.tt/2wPkDpP. Ma Xinle: ‘Anything You Think is Beautiful Can Move Other People’

Chinese artist Ma Xinle reveals how he absorbs influences from both East and West — and why he collects paper up to 300 years old. ‘As an artist, you have to take inspiration from nature, from your observations wherever you go,’ says painter Ma Xinle as we catch up with him in his Beijing studio. ‘For me, the studio is a temporary space for me to create my work; it is not a fixed place. Everywhere is my studio.’ Born in Xi’an, China, in 1963, Ma studied traditional Chinese painting at the Xi’an Academy of Fine Arts under the tutelage of modern masters including Cheng Shifa, Liu Wenxi and Huang Zhou. He went on to pursue an MFA in oil painting from Bowling Green State University, in Ohio, and to teach watercolour and Chinese brush painting techniques. Now an educator, art advisor and cultural representative to organisations including the Beijing Yanhuang Art Museum and the Rockefeller Art Foundation, Ma has been widely exhibited in China, the United States and Canada. In 2016 one of his paintings, The Nine Galloping Horses, was presented to Queen Elizabeth II on her 90th birthday as a state gift from the People’s Republic of China.
