Hidden Treasures: Paintings From a Radical Era in European Art History

Art critic Andrew Graham-Dixon admires highlights from the most important single owner collection of Impressionist and Modern art offered for sale in London for a decade, featuring works by Monet, Renoir, Cézanne, Van Gogh, Bonnard, Matisse and more. The pictures span a radical era in European art history from the latter part of the 19th century to the late 1940s, when avant-garde artists revolutionised the aesthetic possibilities of painting. The collection includes works by Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Paul Cézanne, Vincent van Gogh, Pierre Bonnard, Maurice de Vlaminck and Henri Matisse. As Cyanne Chutkow, Deputy Chairman of Impressionist and Modern Art at Christie’s, explains, ‘The works map the impact that each generation of artists had on the other’. Washing machine repairs: Strange sounds from your washing machine

Got a strange sound coming from your washing machine? Perhaps a banging or scratching noise? This video shows you what the most likely culprit is and how to deal with it. 1. Turn off your machine Before doing any sort of maintenance on your noisy washing machine, you should turn it off and fully unplug it. 2. Check the rubber door seal and drum Run your hand inside the drum. If you’re lucky, you might find a bra wire or something similar poking out from the drum holes. Then, check the grey rubber seal - items that cause noise often end up here at the end of the wash. 3. Identify when items have gone beyond the drum If solid items have gone beyond the drum and into the outer tub, they can make a lot of noise when the machine spins. If this is happening, call an engineer to see if your machine can be fixed. 4. Check the filter Items that make noise during the wash can end up blocking the filter. Locate your filter – it should be at the front of the machine on the right. Remove the plastic cover and pop a shallow container in place to catch the water. Then, pull out the drain hose, remove the cap and drain the water away. Once this is done, you can undo the filter cap and remove the filter to see if there’s anything caught in it. Then, give it a clean it if it’s dirty, and screw it back on, replacing the drain hose and filter cover. Cleaning Gritty & Messy Interior On Can-Am! - Chemical Guys

*Day 2* Can-Am detailing mini-series: Interior! In today's video, Nick moves to the interior of this brand new off-road vehicle. Barreling over dunes and through beaches is exhilarating and a great way to blow off steam that comes from the day to day grind. But all of that wide open throttle action results in sand and mud finding its way into the interior of your vehicle and after a weekend of completely "sending it" this Can-Am is thrashed. Rolling over multiple times and the constant in and out tracks lots of sand in from the bottom of shoes or bare feet. It is not everyday that a detailer willing hoses down the interior of a vehicle but the JetStream Fire Hose Nozzle makes light work of all this mess. Utilizing Nonsense All Purpose Cleaner for spills and messes is perfect for vinyl, rubber, plastic, fabric and much more. •••••••••••• Products Used in Today's Video •••••••••••••• ➜ Nonsense All Purpose Cleaner: https://ift.tt/1WD5KPp ➜ Yellow Workhorse Microfiber Towel: https://ift.tt/2xLC8Ze ➜ JetStream Fire Hose Nozzle: https://ift.tt/2vbJrsr •••••••••• ● Website: www.ChemicalGuys.com ● Subscribe to our channel: https://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=chemicalguys ● Subscribe to our newsletter: https://ift.tt/2vjCz9T ● Like Us on Facebook: https://ift.tt/2uJzRxo ● Follow us on Instagram: https://ift.tt/2vjwfPB

Wine for beginners - Which? experts share 3 essential tips

We've singled out three red wine tips from our experts to take you through the festive months. 1. If your screw-top red is a bit flat or smells sulphurous when you crack it open, it might be lacking oxygen. But, if you pour a bit out, put the cap on and give it a good shake, you might be able to revive it. 2. If you’ve got a wine that’s high in tannins, try having it with certain foods, such as meat or cheese, and you might find it becomes easier and softer to drink. Wine tannins come from grape skins, pips, stalks, and ageing in wooden barrels, and they add bitterness and complexity to wine. You can’t tell tannin content from the label, but you’ll notice that some wines work better with food than when drunk solo. 3. If you’ve got leftover red, try freezing it to cook with later. First, boil the wine to reduce it. Then, once it’s cooled, freeze it in ice cube trays. That way, when you need to add a dash of wine to a meal, you won't need to open a whole new bottle. Know your Black Friday shopping rights

If you're buying Black Friday deals in store or online, you have clear rights set in place by the Consumer Rights Act. So make sure you know what to do, if your Black Friday shopping goes wrong. 1. A faulty Black Friday deal Hunting for the best Black Friday deals can be stressful enough without discovering that you've bought something that's faulty. We recommend that you go to the retailer in the first instance, rather than using a warranty. Move quickly, though, as you only have 30 days in which to reject something that's faulty and get your money back. But after 30 days, you can still ask the retailer to repair or replace it. 2. Unwanted purchases: online vs in store You can only return non-faulty goods for an exchange or refund to a high street retailer if it has a returns policy. Most shops' returns policies state time limits for returning non-faulty products, often 28 days. But sometimes they extend this period – especially at Christmas – so you might have more time than you think. Check when you buy. If you order online, you can cancel the order at any time from the moment you paid and up to 14 days from the date the goods were delivered to you. Once you've notified the retailer that you'd like to cancel, you then have a further 14 days to return the product. 3. Digital content that doesn’t work In 2015, the Consumer Rights Act introduced new digital rights. This essentially means that anything you download or stream – including apps, ebooks, games, music or movies – is now covered by the legislation. The retailer has one opportunity to repair or replace any goods or digital content that are of unsatisfactory quality, unfit for purpose or not as described, before you can demand a refund. Crucially, for the most part, these rights only apply to digital content you pay for, not the free stuff. 4. Problems with a Black Friday delivery It’s always the retailer's responsibility to deliver your goods to you. If your parcel doesn't turn up on time, goes missing altogether, arrives damaged or is stolen from your doorstep, the retailer needs to rectify the situation. You shouldn't have to chase the delivery courier if there is a problem. Know your delivery rights and always speak to the retailer in the first instance. 5. Avoid scams on Black Friday There has been an increase over recent years in goods being sold by unscrupulous sellers on social media and marketplace websites, as it’s easy to set up multiple accounts that don’t require too many details. According to the latest annual Intellectual Property Crime Report, Facebook and Instagram continue to be a focus for scammers selling counterfeit and often unsafe counterfeit goods. So, be careful you know your rights and watch out for scams when buying on Facebook Marketplace. Other platforms such as Twitter, Gumtree, Amazon and Alibaba are also favourites for counterfeiters who use the world-wide reach of such platforms to sell their infringing products. When making purchases around Black Friday and Christmas, try to pay using a credit card as this will offer you more protection under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act if something goes wrong. We advise caution if you see any Black Friday deals advertised on social media that look too good to be true. A Young Marriage Portrait | Anthony van Dyck’s 'Portrait of Princess Mary'

Christie's Old Masters specialist Jonquil O’Reilly illuminates the story behind Anthony van Dyck’s sumptuous 'Portrait of Princess Mary, Daughter of King Charles I of England', who was married at the age of 9 to cement Anglo-Dutch relations. The rare work, which comes from an eminent private collection and has distinguished royal provenance, highlights not only Van Dyck’s significance as a royal court painter, but also his skill as a portraitist of children. In 1632, Van Dyck — by then well-reputed for his spectacular portraits of many of the most important noble dynasties of Europe — was appointed ‘Principal Painter in Ordinary to their Majesties’ by King Charles I in London. A passionate collector and patron, Charles had long hoped to attract a painter of such status to his service, and found in Van Dyck an artist not only capable of fulfilling his desire for magnificent portraits, but also one who shared his tastes, especially for Venetian pictures. Black Friday Investigation

That Black Friday deal may look like a bargain, but our year-long investigation has found that you could get a better discount if you’re willing to wait. We tracked the prices of 94 popular products across five major retailers for six months either side of Black Friday 2017, and found that 87% were the same price or cheaper than their Black Friday price at other times of year. Some 46% of products were cheaper than their Black Friday price on at least one day during the six months afterwards. So, while there were certainly deals to be had, and prices are often considerably lower on Black Friday than at other times of year, if it’s the very lowest price you’re after, and you’re not in a hurry, it may be worth holding off. When is the best time to buy? We used our data to try to determine the best time of year to buy popular products. As you might expect, some items did hit their lowest prices in line with big sale periods - for example, smart speakers such as the Amazon Echo were cheapest around Black Friday, Christmas and New Year. Yet, many popular products, like fitness trackers and kettles, didn’t show a clear trend - making the best time to buy them, whenever there’s a good discount. Tips for bagging a Black Friday bargain The end of November can be a great time to find deals, but don’t be pressured by short-lived promotions or claims of big discounts. If you need to buy something, always make sure you’ve done your research and checked product reviews first. And remember, prices fluctuate all year round, so don’t feel rushed into buying straight away. For our Black Friday shopping advice and 1,000s of reviews, visit https://ift.tt/2S4mtLE - Which? ‘Astonishing for its Quality' | The Eric Albada Jelgersma Collection

‘This is one of the most important private collections of 17th-century Dutch and Flemish Old Master paintings to come to the market in living memory,’ says the head of Christie’s Old Masters department, Henry Pettifer. Why you can’t always trust customer reviews

Online customer reviews claim the Beko CEG7425 Bean to Cup coffee machine is 'outstanding'. But it's one of a range of products our tough lab tests have found seriously fails to impress. Despite online customer scores of between 4 to 5 stars on Amazon, AO.com and Currys PC World, our independent, impartial Which? lab tests found this coffee machine to be such a disappointment that we've named it a Don't Buy. We found five other popular home and tech products highly rated on online retail sites, also fail to live up to expectations. Bank Branch closures

A fifth of households are now more than 3km from their nearest current account provider, but can the alternatives really meet people's banking needs? Banks have closed down thousands of high-street branches over the past three decades and instead ploughed millions into the Post Office to serve people’s basic banking needs. But customers are uncomfortable embracing the Post Office as the alternative to a physical branch, new Which? research reveals. Watch our video for more on the effect of bank branch closures on communities. If your local branch has closed, your bank is required to signpost alternative options in your area. Some banks now use banking vans to visit communities, while others have staff placed in local community buildings to help with customers’ banking needs. But if you’re unhappy with what they’re offering, it may be worth moving your money to another bank, a local credit union or smaller building society. How to defrost your condensate pipe

If your boiler has stopped working in a cold snap, it's worth checking your condensate pipe to see if it’s frozen before you call out a heating engineer. Your boiler's condensate pipe will run directly into a drain, in most cases externally to your property. If this pipe gets blocked with ice, or anything else, then your boiler will automatically shut down as a safety measure. How to defrost your condensate pipe - Locate your condensate pipe. This will be a white pipe that comes out of the wall behind your boiler and runs directly into an outside drain. - Boil a kettle and leave it to cool for 10-15 minutes so that it's warm rather than boiling. - Starting from the top and working your way down, pour the water over the frozen pipe until the ice within has melted. - Reset your boiler and it should work as normal. Art of Manliness Podcast #135: Inventing an Authentic Life with Eric Wilson

Originally published September 2015. The need to “discover your authentic self” has become an article of faith in the United States. There are thousands of blogs, books, and seminars that supposedly teach people how to discover who they really are. But what if our obsession with uncovering an authentic self is getting in the way of living a truly flourishing life? What if instead of trying to discover an authentic life, we should be focused on inventing one instead? Well, that’s the argument Eric Wilson makes in his book Keep it Fake: Inventing an Authentic Life. Today on the podcast, Eric and I discuss questions of the self that have boggled philosophers for ages and how thinking about ourselves as the authors of our story can help us lead a truly excellent life. Show Highlights Why the way most people define authenticity is misguided How the West’s notion of authenticity has changed over time Does the “self” even exist? Why “be yourself” is terrible advice What actors like Cary Grant and Bill Murray can teach you about creating an authentic life Why embracing “enriching fictitious truths” can make life more meaningful What the heck is Romantic Irony? (And how can it make life more interesting?) How thinking of yourself as the writer of your own story can help you with issues like depression and anxiety And much more! The story of Albert Einstein’s ‘God Letter’, his single most famous letter on the subject of God, his Jewish identity, and man’s eternal search for meaning. How To Easily Fix Your Headlights! - Chemical Guys

Yellowing car headlights is caused by improper care and lack of protection. Harsh UV sunlight oxidizes, fades, and cracks sensitive headlight plastic. ‘Souvenirs of a Quest’ | Four Works by Joseph Cornell

Three object-filled boxes and one collage from The Collection of François and Susan de Menil invite the viewer to step into the artist’s magical, mysterious universe. Deep in the basement of his family home at 3708 Utopia Parkway, in the Flushing area of Queens, Joseph Cornell created some of the landmark works of modernist art. Cornell was a shy, solitary man who, in his 69 years, barely left New York. He spent much of his days caring for the ill mother and brother he lived with, yet in his small basement — usually at night — he found refuge and set to work. Find out more: https://ift.tt/2z3rHjS

Yet, it’s a big risk that shouldn’t be taken lightly – so make sure you know how it works and what’s at stake, before you buy a property. What is a 100% mortgage? A 100% mortgage is a loan for the entire cost of the property you’re buying. These come in various forms but they all rely on you having a family member who’s willing and able to act as your guarantor. They will either have to use their own home as security or lock their savings into a special account until you’ve paid off a set amount. The biggest risk with a 100% mortgage is that you could fall into negative equity, which means owing more to your mortgage lender than your property is worth. This could cause you problems if you need to move home or remortgage. As you pay off more of your mortgage and own more of the equity, negative equity becomes less of a concern - but in the first few years of a 100% mortgage, the risk is significant. Which? Mortgage Advisers can help you decide whether a 100% mortgage is right for you. Art of Manliness Pocast #134: A Field Manual For Life After Combat With David Danelo

Originally published September 1, 2015 What happens when a soldier returns from the battlefield? How does a combat veteran transition from the chaos and intense camaraderie that occurs in war to the more placid rhythms of civilian life? How does our society help these individuals make that transition? In his book The Return: A Field Manual for Life After Combat, Marine combat veteran David Danelo argues that our returning soldiers have “a power that must be discovered, honored, and treasured.” The Return offers some big picture ideas on how our military and civilian cultures can protect and nurture this potent gift. Today on the podcast, we discuss how warriors can make the return to civilian life and what civilians can do to help. Show Highlights What caused David to question our assumptions about how to best help soldiers with PTSD based on his own experience with it How the Hero’s Journey can serve as a archetype to help returning combat soldiers Why returning combat soldiers sometimes feel worse when they come home to family and friends than when they were in the battlefield getting shot at How returning combat soldiers can defeat what David calls “Exile” How PTSD can be an asset and not a liability Why civilians need to move beyond saying “Thank for your service.” Why war can be beautiful What civilians can do to help returning combat soldiers How civilians can apply the principles in The Return in their own life And much more! Art of Manliness Podcast #133: Financial Independence With Mr. Money Mustache

Originally published August 2015 What would you say to a person who told you that you could retire at age 30, never have to work again, and still live a comfortable life, all on a normal salary and without winning the lottery? You’d probably call them crazy. Of course that’s not how money works. Well, my guest today did retire at age 30, and he did so without making hundreds of thousands of dollars a year. And through his blog, he’s helped other people reach “financial independence” a lot sooner than they thought possible by living a life of “financial badassery.” His name is Pete and he’s the owner of the website Mr. Money Mustache. In today’s podcast, Pete and I discuss how living Teddy Roosevelt’s “Strenuous Life” can help you become financially independent. Show Highlights How Pete retired at age 30 without making hundreds of thousands of dollars a year The Strenuous Life as a philosophy towards finances What to do when you no longer have to work for money How it’s possible to save up to 75% of your take-home pay (even if you have kids) How much money you need to save in order to become financially independent What you can do to teach your kids about money Where Pete puts the money he saves What you can do to earn more money to increase the amount of money you save And much more! Art of Manliness Podcast #132: The History of the American Bachelor With Howard Chudacoff

Originally published August 2015 While it might not seem so at first blush, the history of the bachelor in America is complex and truly fascinating. When colonists first settled America, the bachelor as an identity didn’t even exist. But as time passed, bachelors became one of the driving forces shaping our concept of manliness in America. In fact, many of the popular ideas we have about manliness today (and that we talk about on the site), emerged out of bachelor culture, particularly from the late 19th century. My guest today on the podcast delved deep into this often overlooked part of history to show that many of the qualms that society has about single men today have in fact existed since the founding of the country. Howard Chudacoff is a professor of history at Brown University and the author of The Age of the Bachelor: Creating an American Subculture. In today’s podcast, Professor Chudacoff and I discuss the evolution of the bachelor throughout American history. Show Highlights Why colonial Americans charged a special tax on bachelors The nickname Ben Franklin gave to bachelors Why there was an explosion of bachelors beginning in the 19th century Why the 19th century was the “Age of the Bachelor” What role barbershops, saloons, and pool halls played in the lives of American bachelors America’s first, great men’s interest magazine — The National Police Gazette John L. Sullivan — King of the Bachelors The status of the American bachelor today And much more! Art of Manliness Podcast #131: Hamlet's Blackberry With William Powers

Originally published August 22, 2015 The day for many Americans goes something like this: wake-up; check phone for texts, emails, and Instagram updates; eat while surfing the web on the smartphone; shower and get dressed; drive to work while listening to a podcast; spend work dividing attention between actual work, websites on the desktop computer, and apps on smartphone; go home and listen to another podcast during the commute; grab a bite to eat; watch some DVRed TV while surfing web and apps on smartphone; go to sleep. Repeat. We have these amazing tools at our disposal that allow us to get more done, more quickly, but oftentimes it feels like we’re the tools of our tools. The result of our constant tech use is that we feel really busy while accomplishing very little. How can we gain more control of our technology so that it helps and doesn’t hinder us from living a good life? Well, my guest today argues that we should look to thinkers like Plato, Seneca, Shakespeare, and Franklin for some answers. His name is William Powers and he’s the author of the book Hamlet’s Blackberry: Building a Good Life in the Digital Age. Show Highlights How the internet can sometimes discourage deep thinking How our tech devices can encourage the “cult of busyness” What Digital Maximalism is and how it can get in the way of our productivity How the internet can both connect and disconnect us from other people What Plato, Seneca, Shakespeare, Franklin, and Thoreau can teach us about living a good life in the digital age How you can make your home a refuge from the tech world and how tech sabbaths can change your life And much more! 'One of the First British Impressionist Works' | Philip Wilson Steer's 'Chatterboxes'

'Chatterboxes' was not much liked by the critics when they first saw it in the late 1880s. Now it offers an exciting missing link between French and British Impressionism. When 'Chatterboxes' by Philip Wilson Steer (1860-1942) was exhibited in the New English Art Club exhibition of 1887, it was greeted with derision by the conservative British press. The Illustrated London News led the outcry, complaining that the painting’s virtues ‘are obscured from our perception by the apparent smudginess or slovenliness of the method’. What the critics were objecting to was Impressionism, the new movement rocking the French establishment. Find out more: https://ift.tt/2JAcmLw
