Medieval Aquamanilia and Metalwork

European sculpture specialist Milo Dickinson talks us through a wonderful array of aquamaniles — bronze water vessels used by noblemen in the Middle Ages, here in the shape of fantastical beasts and men. ‘The term aquamanile comes from two Latin words: aqua, meaning water, and manus, meaning hand,’ explains Milo Dickinson, specialist in early European sculpture at Christie’s in London. From the 12th to the 15th century, before cutlery was widely used, these vessels — shaped like humans or animals — were used for pouring water, specifically for handwashing after meals. Produced in a range of mediums, from more modest pottery to bronze and higher-end silver and gilt copper, their size, design, and the materials with which they were made reflected their owners’ social status. Aquamaniles featured in ecclesiastical life as well: deacons used them to cleanse themselves before performing the Eucharist. The rediscovery of a portrait bust of Joachim Murat, King of Naples, by the great Italian sculptor, is hugely significant for scholars. By 1813, Italian Neoclassical sculptor Antonio Canova was the most celebrated artist in Europe. The son and grandson of quarry-owning stonemasons, his reputation had grown enough to secure pivotal commissions from popes, royals and even the government of the fledgling United States. At the same time, Joachim Murat, then King of Naples, was at the pinnacle of his own career. The son of an innkeeper, Murat had climbed the French military ranks to become one of Napoleon’s most trusted advisors — so much so that the French Emperor offered Murat his sister Caroline’s hand in marriage. The Murats fostered a glittering artistic court in Naples, and one of the highlights of their patronage was to commission their own portraits in marble from Canova. A Hawaiian Kona Figure of Ku-ka’ili-moku

This incredibly rare Hawaiian sculpture depicts the war god known as ‘the island eater.’ Carved some 200 years ago at the height of the islands’ artistic production, figures such as this Kona effigy are almost unknown in private collections. ‘When I first saw this figure I was astonished — really speechless,’ says Susan Kloman, Head of African and Oceanic Art at Christie’s. ‘We couldn’t imagine that such a work could still exist in a private collection. How To Protect New And Old Rides! - Chemical Guys Car Care Camaro SS/Z28/ZL1

It's Camaro week and Chemical Guys has two dirty Camaros from two different eras. Chemical Guys demonstrates how to use a water less wash to remove fine layers of dirt without harming the sensitive paint of these two muscle cars. In addition, Chemical Guys show you how to clean wrapped surfaces to ensure the text remains unaltered. Lastly Chemical Guys applies a paint sealant to keep the paint protected from anything that could etch into the paint finish. To celebrate Camaro week, Nick has two canvases: A 1969 Chevy Camaro SS, and a 2018 Chevy Camro ZL1. The 1969 Chevy Camaro SS is a marvel for its time with a 350 motor that produces 300 horsepower. The 1969 Camaro has been stored in a garage away from the damaging effects of the outside. Nick uses an atomizer filled with diluted EcoSmart to remove a fine layer of dust from the paint, headlights, wheels, tires, and windows. Nick uses a microfiber towel to remove the EcoSmart when it hazes up after spraying. Nick proceeds to the 2018 Camaro ZL1 where he uses the EcoSmart on the carbon fiber wing spolier, roof, tail lights, headlights and glass. The 2018 Camaro ZL1 has a manual 650 horsepower V8 engine. One catch though, the hood and the wheels are wrapped, which requires a different approach. Nick uses Meticulous Matte to remove any dirt, debris, and environmental contamination from the wrap's surface. Meticulous Matte is a hybrid formula that cleans and protects with a specially formulated sealant. To put the final touch on this detail, Nick grabs a bottle of Jet Seal; Chemical Guys ultra durable liquid sealant that protects the paint from bird droppings, water spots, tree sap and oxidation caused by exposure to the sun. Nick spreads a thin layer on his applicator and applies Jet Seal on both vehicles, coating the paint, wheels, headlights, windows, and spoiler. After letting JetSeal cure on the paint for 15-20 minutes, Nick buffs off the excess with a microfiber towel. Art historian Jacky Klein discusses the devotional power of the 16th-century masterpiece. Born in 1541 on the Greek island of Crete, Doménikos Theotokópoulos, known as El Greco, grew up in one of the few remaining outposts of the Greek Orthodox church that was still producing Byzantine art some 100 years after the fall of Constantinople. By age 22, El Greco had become a master of the local artist’s guild. Around 1567 El Greco travelled to Venice, where he studied under the Italian master Titian. In Italy he ‘picked up the spirit of Venetian painting, which is all about luscious rich textured surfaces,’ explains art historian Jacky Klein. After a stint in Rome, El Greco’s work also adopted the twisting figures and unusual perspectives associated with the contemporary Mannerist style. How To Enhance & Protect A Bright White Finish | 2015 Camaro Z28

We're continuing Camaro Week with a white 2015 Chevy Camaro Z28 and it's full-speed ahead to bring out the ultimate shine. Chemical Guys demonstrate the proper steps to upkeep your white exterior paintwork in the simplest and safest ways. This Camaro Z28 may go challenge the speed of lightning on the road but when it's parked is when a flawless detail is needed for onlookers to gaze upon a sight they've never seen before. Let's take a quick overview of the steps that Nick takes to ensure this Camaro is the belle of the ball. The Camaro Z28 has been kept in pretty good condition but it still has a very noticeable layer of dust, dirt, debris that take away from it's shine and actually makes it a bit dull to look at. A quick detail spray like Chemical Guys' Hybrid V7 is just what it needs to remove this layer and add a high gloss shine. While removing the sheet of filth, the Hybrid V7 is also adding a layer of sealant to protect it from fading, discoloring and becoming oxidized from UV solar rays. Remember to use a plush microfiber towel and wipe in straight lines to avoid adding any unnecessary swirls that are much more noticeable. If you're looking to take the shine even further, exploit the benefits that White Light can provide with a dripping wet finish on a smooth white exterior. The enhanced shine can be hazardous on the road because of how bright it can reflect the sun. The main reason it's able to create such a high shine is because of its swirl-filling ability to hide any minor scratches or swirls. These minor imperfections are hidden so that the sun only reflects off a sleek finish. To top off the white detail regimen on the Camaro Z28 is the carnauba wax of White Wax that locks in the durability and gloss of its immense shine. The way it's able to do this is with its anti-static coat to repel minor dust, dirt, and water spots that we had to get rid of in the first place. 29.01.64: Zao Wou-Ki at the Crossroads

Eric Chang, Head of Asian 20th Century and Contemporary Art at Christie’s in Hong Kong, on a masterwork by the artist who bridged East and West. Born in China in 1920, Zao Wou-Ki moved to France in 1948. In his formative years he was inspired by artists such as Matisse and Picasso, and he continued to be influenced by Western Modernism and the work of the Impressionists and Expressionists. Following his move to Paris, his paintings shifted toward abstraction. Zao’s art has deep roots in the landscape painting tradition of China’s Song and Yuan dynasties. The vertical composition of 29.01.64 recalls 11th-century landscapes including those of Gui Xi, punctuated with high mountains and trees. Pablo Atchugarry – 'Working with Stone is Dramatic' | Studio Visit

Covered in marble dust, the Uruguayan sculptor breaks off from his labours in his adopted home of Lecco on the shores of Lake Como to talk Carrara marble and Michelangelo. Encouraged to pursue an artistic career from a young age, Uruguayan artist Pablo Atchugarry executed his first sculptures in cement and iron in the 1970s. The Montevideo-born sculptor began working in marble in 1979, following his first solo show in Lecco, Italy, a year earlier, and exhibitions in several European cities. In 1982, he carved his first monumental sculpture in Carrara marble. ‘When I started to work as an artist, I realised very quickly that I had no other choice but to become a sculptor,’ Atchugarry says. ‘The first time I visited Carrara, it was like finding true love. I felt that Michelangelo had been there and left something there for other sculptors to follow in his footsteps. In 2017, some 50 of the world’s top watchmakers have donated timepieces made specifically for Only Watch – a biennial charity auction of unique luxury timepieces in Geneva. Warhol’s Radical Departures

These works on paper by Andy Warhol, from the collection of art dealer and curator Anthony d’Offay, were executed between 1962 and 1966. The unique silkscreens, including Race Riot (1963) and Ambulance Disaster (1963), and three rare trial proof images of Jacqueline Kennedy — Jackie I, Jackie II and Jackie III (all circa 1966) — relate directly to paintings made by Warhol of the same subjects. One of a small number of Race Riot works on paper in existence, the 1963 Race Riot silkscreen being offered was based on a photograph taken in the same year by photojournalist Charles Moore of demonstrations in Birmingham, Alabama. Earlier that year, bombings had targeted black leaders of the Birmingham Civil Rights campaign. Explosive devices were placed at the parsonage of Rev. A. D. This groundbreaking painting of the early 20th century marks a departure from the purely figurative and the advance towards abstract art. How To Restore A Barn Find Car: Classic 1976 Corvette Stingray - Chemical Guys Car Care

There are some of us who have cars like this 1976 Corvette Stingray just sitting in the garage that have been dirty for so long. Chemical Guys shows you how to clean classic vintage cars that have not been maintained. These antique cars are one of the most difficult cars to clean and maintain because their paint is so sensitive. Nick applies his detailing knowledge in restoring this Corvette back to glory. First, we take care of the tires and wheels by using Light Metal Polish on the rim trim to restore it's shine and rid of any light scratches on it. Next, we clean the tires using All Clean to completely rid of any filth and road grime that it has gotten from the road. After truly getting it clean, we applied VRP because it's a water-based dressing that's going to give it a nice crisp sheen while also being dry-to-the-touch to prevent any sling during a drive. To top off the cleaning, we used EcoSmart to clean the interior of the rims to make it nice and vibrant with a layer of wax to protect it from heavy brake dust that this Corvette Stingray is prone to. As we've mentioned earlier, the paint of this 1976 classic is very sensitive and we don't know how well the seals are and we don't want to cause any leakage. Using a quick detail spray like Hybrid V7 is perfect to get rid of all the dust that has settled on a vintage car like this one. Hybrid V7 is perfect to remove these light layers of dust, fingerprints, bug & bird residues, etc. while adding a nice layer of shine and protection from it's sealant technology abilities. In the year before his death, Van Gogh lived in the asylum of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole. 'Laboureur dans un champ' reflects an artist determined to heal himself through work. On most mornings between May 1889 and May 1890, the outside world visible to Vincent van Gogh appeared much like it does in Laboureur dans un champ: a low stone wall enclosing a wheat field, a few poplars, an old farm house, a ploughman tilling the soil. Van Gogh began this painting in the final days of August 1889, completing it on 2 September. It was a momentous development for Van Gogh, who had not handled his brushes for a month and a half. Dr. Théophile Peyron and the attendants at the asylum of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole in Saint-Rémy had locked the artist out of his studio, awaiting his return to good health and a stable, less frenzied state of mind.
