Piecing Together Jeff Koons' 'Play-Doh'

A fascinating behind-the-scenes look at the intricate construction of Jeff Koons’ monumental masterpiece. In 2014 Jeff Koons debuted his massive sculpture, Play-Doh, one of the largest and most complex works from the Celebration series he had begun in the mid-1990s. The piece, which took two decades to complete, instantly became an icon of contemporary art. Play-Doh’s execution was the result of decades of research and craftsmanship, and the contributions of scientists, metallurgists and modellers. Painstakingly constructed out of 27 interlocking sections of aluminium, each fitted on top of the other, Play-Doh is held together by gravity alone. Although viewers will never see it — except when the work is taken apart, as shown in this video — Koons painted each of these sections in their entirety. In addition to creating a hidden dimension of intimacy, this artistic decision perfectly encapsulates the extreme attention to detail for which Koons has become renowned. How to transfer a cash Isa - Which? top tips

Old Isas can pay miserable rates of interest, so you could significantly improve your returns by transferring to providers offering the best rates. There are no limits on the number of transfers you can make in a tax year. However, you can only make new contributions into one cash Isa and one stocks and shares Isa each tax year. How To Polish and Protect A Brand New Car! - Mustang GT - Chemical Guys

Why would you polish a brand new car? In today's video, Joseph and Nick continue the detailing process on this 2018 Mustang GT. After washing and decontaminating the paint, it is apparent that the pristine finish actually harbors fine scratches and swirls from careless washing and drying techniques. Slick Finish cleans, restores, and protects paintwork on any classic car, modern car, and custom paint finish. Easily remove light oxidation, faded paint, water spots, stains, and spots with Slick Finish Cleaner Wax. How to haggle with your broadband provider

If you're looking for the best broadband deal you can save money by haggling with your provider to get the cheapest internet. The broadband customers we surveyed saved an average of £120 a year on their bills by learning how to haggle. Follow our five top tips to haggle your way to a cheaper broadband deal... 1) Do your research! If you appear knowledgeable, you're more likely to get a better deal. 2) Build your case! Check how long you’ve been with your provider and note down any issues you’ve had during this time. 3) Speak to your provider & ask for a discount! Let them know you’ve seen competitive offers for a similar service and ask whether these can be matched or beaten. 4) Suggest you'd like to leave! If you're out of contract, or your provider has announced price increases within the past 30 days, you can state that regrettably you'll have to consider leaving the service. 5) No luck? Say you'd like to cancel your contract! Ask to speak to someone in cancellations or retention. The retention team can usually offer far better deals than their colleagues in customer service. What is black box car insurance? - Which? top tips

If you want to pay less for your car insurance, telematics or black box car insurance could help bring down costs. It works by allowing your car insurer to track how you drive, in most cases either by installing a device into your vehicle or through a smartphone app. The insurer receives data about your mileage, the times of day you drive, speed, acceleration and how you brake and take corners to set a premium that more accurately reflects how careful a driver you are, rather than a guess based on your age. Careful drivers can then be rewarded by receiving a discounted premium or money back. While riskier drivers could face a higher premium or have their policy cancelled. How To Detail A Brand New Car! - Mustang GT - Chemical Guys

You've just bought a brand new car, but how do you keep it looking showroom fresh? A brand new car rolled in to the Detail Garage, and the owner of the car says he wants to protect his investment and keep it looking brand new for as long as possible. With his vehicle being driven daily in Los Angeles, how can he possibly keep his car looking fresh, clean, and new? Today Nick and Joseph treat this brand new Mustang GT to a wash using Clean Slate to gently remove adhesive from protective films during transport as well as coats of sealant and wax to expose the surface for inspection. Professional detailers routinely remove old layers of wax and sealant that block fresh wax, clear bras, and vinyl wraps from sticking directly to paintwork. Argos kettle challenge - Which boils quickest?

No one likes waiting for a kettle to boil, so in this episode of Challenge Wednesdays we’ve pitted two popular Argos Cookworks kettles against each other to see which one makes a round of tea the quickest. In the red corner we have the stylish Cookworks Copper Kettle which costs £30 and has a 1.7L capacity. In the blue corner it’s the Cookworks Jug kettle - cheap and cheerful at only £13, also with a 1.7L capacity. To make the challenge as fair as possible, both kettles were filled with one litre of room-temperature water and the teabags had to brew for 30 seconds. The verdict? In this instance, money really does buy you happiness, as the Copper Kettle smashed the Jug Kettle in the race to get to the boil. And rightly so, since it is more than twice the price. We hope you enjoy this video. Art of Manliness Podcast #118: A Wrestling Life With Dan Gable

Originally published June 2015 If you’re familiar with the world of collegiate or Olympic wrestling, then you probably know who Dan Gable is. As a wrestler, he only lost one match during his college career at Iowa State University and he won the gold medal at the 1972 Olympics while not giving up a single point. He went on to coach at the University of Iowa where he led the team to 15 NCAA titles between 1976 and 1997. In today’s podcast I talk to Coach Gable about wrestling, leadership, and life as well as his new book, A Wrestling Life. Show Highlights How not to be a “Molly Putz” How Dan helped his family cope with the tragic murder of his teenage sister How Dan developed his tenacious drive to succeed What Dan learned from his only defeat in college (and how it made him a better wrestler) How Dan transitioned from wrestler to coach, and from full-time coaching to semi-retirement The coaching and leadership principles that guided Dan throughout his career Why success requires learning “The Patience of Change” And much more! A dedicated exhibition at Christie’s in London explores themes of religion, faith and divinity in post-war and contemporary art. Sacred Noise, a dedicated exhibition of 30 works at Christie’s in London on show until 21 July, charts the reinterpretation and subversion of these themes in the 20th century. Art of Manliness Podcast #116: The Southern Gentleman’s Kitchen With Matt Moore

Originally published May 2015. If you’ve read the site for awhile, you’re likely familiar with Matt Moore, AoM’s resident food writer. Matt broke into the cookbook scene with his self-published cookbook Have Her Over For Dinner, which was named one of the best cookbooks of 2010 by The New York Times. Since then, Matt has continued to write about cooking, created a successful cologne business with his college buds, and started a family. Matt recently published a book with Southern Living magazine entitled A Southern Gentleman’s Kitchen. Today on the podcast I talk to Matt about cooking, chivalry, boar hunting, entrepreneurship, and how to make the perfect steak. Show Highlights How Matt shifted from a music career to writing about cooking — without ever going to culinary school How Matt started a successful cologne company — Moonshine Cologne — without any experience in the fragrance industry How to deal with rejection when you’re an entrepreneur Why a man should know how to cook Matt’s tips for cooking the perfect steak And much more! Art of Manliness Podcast #115: The Slumbering Masses With Matthew J. Wolf-Meyer

Originally published May 2015. Show notes: https://ift.tt/2LnLMFM Sometimes when I’m lying in my bed falling asleep, a thought will come across my mind: at this moment tens of millions of people are going completely unconscious and immobile and having crazy hallucinations. Because if you think about it, that’s what happens when you fall asleep. And you pretty much go to sleep whenever everybody in your timezone or near your timezone goes to sleep too. But my guest on today’s podcast argues that we take our current sleep schedule for granted. In fact, it wasn’t until about the middle of the 19th century that what we consider “normal sleep” — sleeping in one big chunk of time between the hours of 10 PM and 8 AM — even became a thing. What caused us to get on this “consolidated” sleep schedule, what was it like before, and what implications does it have for work and relationships? Matthew J. Wolf-Meyer is an associate professor of anthropology at the University of California Santa Cruz and the author of the book The Slumbering Masses: Sleep, Medicine and Modern American Life. Today on the podcast Dr. Wolf-Meyer and I discuss the anthropology of sleep. Show Highlights What sleep was like before the 19th century The role Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Edison played in today’s sleeping schedule Why insomnia isn’t so much a sleep disorder as a social disorder How our American sleep and work schedule has spread to Europe and around the world How our sleep/work schedule drives the coffee/energy drink market What you can do if your personal sleep schedule doesn’t jive with society’s sleep schedule And much more! Art of Manliness Podcast #114: Becoming a Kabuki Warrior With Chris Duffin

Originally published May 2015 World record-setting powerlifter Chris Duffin embodies what Teddy Roosevelt called “the strenuous life.” Not only has he trained hard to lift superhuman amounts of weight, but he’s strived to be the best man he can be in his family and professional life. Chris came from a life of poverty, but through grit and drive he’s been able to create a great life for himself and his family. You’ve got to read his backstory; if there’s such a thing as a self-made man, Duffin is it. Chris and I talk about strength training and why men should be physically strong, but we also discuss how he has managed to balance family, work, and competitive powerlifting. Lots of great takeaways from this show. Show Highlights How Chris went from living in a condemned trailer as a child to becoming a corporate executive, owning his own gym, and setting powerlifting world records A crash-course on the world of powerlifting Why a man should strive to become a “Kabuki Warrior” How physical strength helps a man become a pillar of strength in his family and community How a workout tool used by ancient Hindus can help you become a better lifter In five minutes, Chris gives you pretty much all the info you’ll ever need on nutrition and strength training And much more! Originally published April 2015 For the past year or so, I’ve gotten tweets and emails from AoM readers telling me to check out a book called The Encyclopedia of Underground Strength and Conditioning. Zach Even-Esh is a strength and conditioning coach and creator of the Underground Strength program. It emphasizes functional strength and conditioning, marrying techniques used by strongmen since the early 1900s with modern practices. Tire flipping, sledgehammers, deadlifting rocks (and barbells) are just some of the exercises you’ll find in the Underground Strength program. Zach and I discuss the origins of Underground Strength and what men can start doing today to become stronger. Art of Manliness Podcast #113: The Origins of Depression With Jonathan Rottenberg

Originally published May 2015 Last month, we published an in-depth series on depression. One of the most insightful books I came across during my research for it was The Depths: The Evolutionary Origins of the Depression Epidemic. The author, Jonathan Rottenberg, makes the case that depression, or low mood, is an evolved trait that served our pre-historic ancestors well. However, what was once an adaptive trait is now maladaptive due to our stressful, fast-moving modern environment. In today’s podcast, Dr. Rottenberg and I discuss how looking at depression through an evolutionary lens can give us a new perspective on treating and managing it. A must listen if you or someone you know is suffering from depression. Art of Manliness Podcast #110: Hardboiled Detectives, Boxing, & Creativity With David Levien

Originally published April 2015 A few months ago I had screenwriter, producer, and director Brian Koppelman on the podcast. During our conversation, Brian mentioned that he’s collaborated with his lifelong friend David Levien on many of the screenplays he’s worked on. When Brian told me that David not only works on screenplays but boxes and writes a popular detective novel series, I had to get him on the show because, well, I’m a big fan of detective novels and boxing! Art of Manliness Podcast #108: The Upside of Your Dark Side With Todd Kashdan

Originally published April 2015 You can’t go anywhere these days without running into an article or a book on how to be more positive and upbeat. Pessimism and anger are seen as traits we should do all we can to avoid. But my guest today says that view might be a little too narrow and short-sighted. His name is Dr. Todd Kashdan, and he’s the co-author of the book, The Upside of Your Dark Side. Today on the podcast we talk about the benefits of getting in touch with your so-called “negative” emotions and the potential downsides of too much positivity. This podcast dovetails nicely with our recent series on depression, but it’s about much more than melancholy. Show Highlights The rise of “happiness fascism” How positivity can make us stupid Why our pursuit of comfort and happiness is making us more miserable The benefits of anxiety and depression How to make anger productive Why mindlessness is great What Teddy Roosevelt can teach us about the benefits of narcissism and psychopathy How to be better managers of our different emotions so we can get the benefits of both the positive and negative And much more! Irobot Roomba 980 vs Dyson 360 Eye - robot vacuum obstacle course challenge

In this episode of Challenge Wednesdays, we wanted to see which robot vacuum could navigate our obstacle course with the least amount of destruction, cleaning as it went. We pitted the Irobot Roomba 980 against the Dyson 360 Eye in a course containing a teetering tower of jenga, a tangle of wires and a balancing bird. We also laid out strips of lentils and glitter to see which vac was most effective at cleaning. The verdict? Overall we feel the Dyson 360 Eye won the challenge as it managed to carefully navigate the obstacle course with only one fatality - the balancing bird. It did, however, get very confused towards the end of the challenge which meant that it left a small amount of lentils and glitter unvacuumed on the floor. The Irobot Roomba seemed to be on a path of destruction, bulldozing the jenga and everything else in sight and pushing debris around the room with no regard for tidiness. It did manage to vacuum most of the lentils and glitter, but we feel it lost overall due to its navigational skills. We hope you enjoy this video. Art of Manliness Podcast #104: The Code of Man With Waller Newell

Originally published March 2015 I’ve quoted Dr. Waller Newell several times in my writing about masculinity on the Art of Manliness, and his approach towards manhood is very similar to the one that I take. If these disappear, she’ll be left facing a 14-mile round trip to the next nearest cash machine.
