One of my favorite writers is a fella by the name of Adam Makos. Ever since Adam was a teenager, he’s dedicated his life to interviewing Greatest Generation veterans and telling their stories. I had him on the podcast last year to discuss his bestselling book, A Higher Call, which tells the incredible story of how one of Germany’s top aces escorted a badly damaged U.S. bomber back to Allied territory during WWII and how the two men piloting those planes were able to meet each other as old men and become friends. Well, Adam is back with another book about an unbelievable story that he’s come across during his interviewing and writing. This one took place in the Korean War. Devotion: An Epic Story of Heroism, Friendship, and Sacrifice tells the true tale of two men from completely different worlds: one, the black son of Southern sharecroppers; the other, a white man from a rich New England family. During the course of their service as naval fighter pilots the two men became good friends. That friendship is put to the test when one of them is shot down on a remote North Korean mountain during the Battle of the Chosin Reservoir. Devotion asks: How far would you go to save a friend? While each was published months to years ago, I still get tweets and letters from men saying how much they appreciated the articles, and how they inspired them to adopt a better mindset and take more action in their lives. Those 3 pieces all have something in common: they were written by a fella by the name of Kyle Eschenroeder. Kyle’s one of the most interesting guys I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting online. He started day trading in high school and now he runs a successful company called StartUp Bros that help individuals with their e-commerce businesses. While that’s all really impressive, what impresses me most about Kyle is how well-read he is and how earnestly he grapples with a lot of hard ideas. He’s extremely thoughtful and I love how we tries to connect all these disparate ideas in creative and useful ways that are relevant to navigating our current culture and its unique challenges and opportunities. Seeing how Kyle’s posts have really resonated with AoM readers, I thought it would be great to get him on the podcast to discuss some of the ideas he’s explored with us. Artist Umberto Boccioni’s Unique Forms of Continuity in Space | Christie's

Max Carter, Christie's Head of Impressionist and Modern Art in New York, tells the story of a career-defining Futurist work, made just two years before the artist’s tragic death. On 11 April 1912, the Italian artist Umberto Boccioni (1882-1916) published his Technical Manifesto of Futurist Sculpture. He hadn’t yet fully committed himself to being a sculptor and yet, by the end of the following year, he had sculpted a work so complex and forward-thinking that it is now considered to be a cornerstone of Futurism, as well as his masterpiece. Boccioni’s brainwave was to break down blocks of movement and convert them into curves that extended past the shape of a human body, before reassembling them as a forward-marching figure. As the artist himself stated, Unique Forms of Continuity in Space was a ‘synthetic continuity’ of motion; an abstract image of man striding boldly and continuously towards a brave new world, in every direction at once.
