The Clarke Collection: A West Coast Love Story | Christie's

For architect Fred Clarke and his wife Laura Weir Clarke, collecting art has been a demanding but rewarding journey. ‘Art is so challenging,’ explains Fred when we meet the couple in their Connecticut home. ‘If you let it be challenging though, it can be one of the most invigorating things you could ever get involved with.’ Over the past 50 years, the Clarkes have assembled a remarkable collection of works on paper, sculpture and design that charts the stylistic and technical developments of post-war art and printmaking on the West Coast in the 1960s, ’70s and beyond. Some of the biggest and most experimental names in contemporary art are represented, including Ken Price, Donald Judd and Vija Celmins. The core of the collection, however, is formed of works by Ed Ruscha.
