The hidden dangers of salt in your food - Which?

Are you worried about too much salt in your diet? With experts saying around three quarters of the salt we eat is already in foods we buy, what can we do to reduce our intake? Figures from the NHS and the National Diet and Nutrition Survey (NDNS) show that UK adults consume an average of 8.4g a day, over the 6g recommended maximum. Too much salt in the diet has also been described as ‘a silent killer’ by pressure group Action on Salt and can cause high blood pressure and increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke and heart attacks. We take a look at some of the surprising foods containing high levels of salt, and tell you how to see past the ‘health halos’ given to these items often labelled as convenient and healthy snacks. This clip features Shefalee Loth. She is a nutritionist at Which? and leads the research for the health and wellbeing team. With over 20 years of experience, Shefalee’s extensive career includes working with the NHS, The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, and the World Cancer Research Fund. We also have Laura Clark, widely known as The Menopause Dietitian. She’s a registered dietitian with over two decades of clinical experience. She has supported thousands of patients, combining nutritional science with behavioural therapy and intuitive eating counselling. Check out the full video on the Which? YouTube channel.
