Air travel has an alcohol problem - Which? investigates

Is the airline industry paying lip-service to tackling drunk passengers? An investigation by Which? Travel has found drunken abusive behaviour on flights is growing, but sources say some airlines are unwilling to do anything about it. An easyJet whistleblower has told Which? the airline is paying ‘lip service’ to reducing alcohol fuelled abuse by running on-board alcohol sales incentives. In response, easyJet say its staff work to a ‘serve responsibly’ policy, meaning they monitor consumption and refuse to serve anyone who’s drunk. But confirmed it does run ‘on-board sales incentives’ for all products sold, not just alcohol. It didn’t give us a figure for how much training staff are given to deal with disruptive passengers but said its ‘appropriate’, ‘robust’ and refreshed each year. The airline told us it encourages staff to report incidents and claims they are able to do this when on board the flight or immediately afterwards. How would you feel if you received an out of date gift voucher, a pineapple cutting machine or a hand-knitted willy warmer on Christmas Day? Watch our video for a glimpse into shoppers’ experiences of gifts gone wrong. Which? surveyed more than 2,000 people about their shopping and gifting habits at Christmas. Of the 93% who told us they had received one or more Christmas presents in December 2017, a quarter of them had received an unwanted gift. What to do with unwanted Christmas gifts Using it, exchanging for an alternative gift in store and putting it in a church raffle are some of the things gift recipients told us they did with unloved presents last year. Other people put the present away to re-gift for next Christmas, some said they planned to sell it on an online marketplace website like eBay and some kept it, saying ‘it’s the thought that counts’. Your unwanted gift returns rights If you’ve received something you don't like, you’re best off asking whoever bought it to return it for you. This is because the contract of sale is between them and the retailer. If you’ve got a gift receipt, returning it should be relatively easy. Gift receipts usually allow you to exchange for a different item of the same value. Without a gift receipt or original payment card, it’s a bit trickier to return unwanted goods - you’re reliant on knowing where the person purchased the gift as well as the goodwill of the retailer to let you return it. If you know where it’s from, try asking politely in store, or if it’s an online retailer, contact their customer service. It’s not guaranteed you’ll be able to get an exchange, but it’s worth a go - you might be able to get store credit. Perry A. Margouleff, owner of Pie Studios on Long Island, New York, recollects how a concert he saw at Fillmore East at the age of nine launched a lifelong love of electric guitars. One in four people who shop online around the Christmas period find that at least one of their parcels fails to turn up, according to new Which? research. What our video for delivery fails as told by consumers, including parcels being left in funny places, parcels disappearing, and how the issues were resolved. We asked almost 2,000 people about their online shopping between November 2017 and the end of January 2018 to find out if their deliveries went to plan. Almost three in five shoppers (58%) who had a delivery over the Christmas period experienced a problem, with at least one delivery not going as planned. What are your delivery rights? How to fix a dishwasher that won't start

If your dishwasher won't start, follow our quick guide to see if you can fix the problem without calling in a professional. 1. If the control panel doesn’t show any signs of life, the first thing to check is the socket. Try unplugging your dishwasher, and plugging in something else - a lamp, for example. Unsafe slime to avoid this Christmas - Which? investigates

We tested slime from a range of online and high street stores and found that more than 40% fail the EU safety standard for toys. Which? lab tested 13 slimes and putties to see whether the childrens' toys on sale for Christmas contain safe levels of boron. It's potentially dangerous to be exposed to excessive levels of the chemical which could cause health issues such as vomiting, developmental delays and fertility issues. Our investigation found that more than 40% of the slimes and putties that we tested contain too much boron to be on sale. The worst slime we tested had more than four and a half times the permitted level of boron. This was the Essenson DIY slime kit which was bought from Amazon. We passed our findings on to the manufacturers of the slimes and the retailers we bought them from, asking for them to be removed from sale. Repairing a dishwasher that won't drain edit

If your dishwasher won't drain, follow our quick guide to see if you can fix the problem without calling in a professional. 1. Blocked filters are a common cause of dishwashers not draining, but they're easy to check and fix. You'll find the filters in the bottom of the dishwasher; they come in three parts and are very easy to pull or twist out. Remove, clean and replace the filters. If you use your dishwasher regularly, it’s a good idea to clean the filters every week or so. You can do this by running them under the tap. 2. If cleaning the filters doesn’t fix the problem, check that the waste hose at the back of the dishwasher isn’t squashed or kinked – if it is, this could stop the waste water from draining away. If you have a freestanding machine, you and one other person will be able to pull it away from the wall. You can then check that there's enough room for the hose to drain properly. If you have an integrated model this will be trickier, and would be worth calling in a professional for. 3. Tryggve Gran’s journals provide a direct line from the here and now right back to Captain Scott’s freezing, fatal tent in 1912. On 29 October 1912, the search party set out. They were looking for their leader, Captain Robert Falcon Scott, and his four close companions, who a few months earlier had begun a quest to become the first men ever to reach the South Pole. On 12 November, though, came a grim discovery: a tent containing the frozen corpses of Scott and two of his comrades (Edward Wilson and Henry Robertson Bowers). ‘All gastsly [sic]. I will never forget it so long I live — a horrible nightmare could not have shown more horror,’ wrote one search party member, Tryggve Gran, in his journal that day. ‘In a tent, snowcovered til up above the door, we found the three boddies. The Owner [Scott] in the middle... Birdie [Bowers] on his right and Uncle Bill [Wilson] on his left... Washing Machine Repairs: Smelly washing machine

Got a bad smell coming from your washing machine? We'll show you the probable causes and how to deal with them, and also reveal why a service wash is so important. 1. Run a service wash To stop odours building up in the drum, run a service wash every month. This is a very hot wash without any clothes in the drum that washing machine manufacturers recommend. We tend to wash clothes at low temperatures, and while 40° is hot enough to clean most clothes, it won’t completely rid your machine of bacteria or mould. Check your manual to find out which programme to wash on. 2. Clean the door seal Mould can grow in the rubber seal around the door. So, give the seal a quick wipe clean with a damp cloth every week. If the mould is established, as well as smelly, it could damage the seal too. If this happens, it would be best to hire a professional to replace the door seal. 3. Wash out the detergent drawer The detergent drawer and the area around it can get smelly. Once you’ve run your service wash, remove the draw and give it all a wipe clean, including its housing. 4. Clean the filter The filter on a washing machine can also harbour nasty smells. It’s usually found at the front of the machine, at the bottom right hand side. Flip off the cover and drain any excess water using the hose - you’ll need a shallow tray or towel to catch the water. Once you’ve done this, unscrew the filter and give it a clean. It’s likely to be caked in gunk and this can be very smelly. But, cleaning it in some warm water should help reduce any smells. 5. Leave the door and detergent draw open Another tip to keep your machine odour free is to leave its door open after washing. This allows air to circulate around the drum, which helps to prevent the growth of mould and bacteria. And it’s also worth leaving your machine's detergent drawer partially open for the same reason. 6. Check the waste pipe If you’ve checked all of this and the smells still persist, they might be coming from your waste pipe, which is where waste water from your machine empties. If you think there could be a blockage, try some drain unblocker. If after all of this, you can’t fix the problem yourself try Which? Washing machine repairs: Strange sounds from your washing machine

Got a strange sound coming from your washing machine? Perhaps a banging or scratching noise? This video shows you what the most likely culprit is and how to deal with it. 1. Turn off your machine Before doing any sort of maintenance on your noisy washing machine, you should turn it off and fully unplug it. 2. Check the rubber door seal and drum Run your hand inside the drum. If you’re lucky, you might find a bra wire or something similar poking out from the drum holes. Then, check the grey rubber seal - items that cause noise often end up here at the end of the wash. 3. Identify when items have gone beyond the drum If solid items have gone beyond the drum and into the outer tub, they can make a lot of noise when the machine spins. If this is happening, call an engineer to see if your machine can be fixed. 4. Check the filter Items that make noise during the wash can end up blocking the filter. Locate your filter – it should be at the front of the machine on the right. Remove the plastic cover and pop a shallow container in place to catch the water. Then, pull out the drain hose, remove the cap and drain the water away. Once this is done, you can undo the filter cap and remove the filter to see if there’s anything caught in it. Then, give it a clean it if it’s dirty, and screw it back on, replacing the drain hose and filter cover. Know your Black Friday shopping rights

If you're buying Black Friday deals in store or online, you have clear rights set in place by the Consumer Rights Act. So make sure you know what to do, if your Black Friday shopping goes wrong. 1. A faulty Black Friday deal Hunting for the best Black Friday deals can be stressful enough without discovering that you've bought something that's faulty. We recommend that you go to the retailer in the first instance, rather than using a warranty. Move quickly, though, as you only have 30 days in which to reject something that's faulty and get your money back. But after 30 days, you can still ask the retailer to repair or replace it. 2. Unwanted purchases: online vs in store You can only return non-faulty goods for an exchange or refund to a high street retailer if it has a returns policy. Most shops' returns policies state time limits for returning non-faulty products, often 28 days. But sometimes they extend this period – especially at Christmas – so you might have more time than you think. Check when you buy. If you order online, you can cancel the order at any time from the moment you paid and up to 14 days from the date the goods were delivered to you. Once you've notified the retailer that you'd like to cancel, you then have a further 14 days to return the product. 3. Digital content that doesn’t work In 2015, the Consumer Rights Act introduced new digital rights. This essentially means that anything you download or stream – including apps, ebooks, games, music or movies – is now covered by the legislation. The retailer has one opportunity to repair or replace any goods or digital content that are of unsatisfactory quality, unfit for purpose or not as described, before you can demand a refund. Crucially, for the most part, these rights only apply to digital content you pay for, not the free stuff. 4. Problems with a Black Friday delivery It’s always the retailer's responsibility to deliver your goods to you. If your parcel doesn't turn up on time, goes missing altogether, arrives damaged or is stolen from your doorstep, the retailer needs to rectify the situation. You shouldn't have to chase the delivery courier if there is a problem. Know your delivery rights and always speak to the retailer in the first instance. 5. Avoid scams on Black Friday There has been an increase over recent years in goods being sold by unscrupulous sellers on social media and marketplace websites, as it’s easy to set up multiple accounts that don’t require too many details. According to the latest annual Intellectual Property Crime Report, Facebook and Instagram continue to be a focus for scammers selling counterfeit and often unsafe counterfeit goods. So, be careful you know your rights and watch out for scams when buying on Facebook Marketplace. Other platforms such as Twitter, Gumtree, Amazon and Alibaba are also favourites for counterfeiters who use the world-wide reach of such platforms to sell their infringing products. When making purchases around Black Friday and Christmas, try to pay using a credit card as this will offer you more protection under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act if something goes wrong. That Black Friday deal may look like a bargain, but our year-long investigation has found that you could get a better discount if you’re willing to wait. We tracked the prices of 94 popular products across five major retailers for six months either side of Black Friday 2017, and found that 87% were the same price or cheaper than their Black Friday price at other times of year. Some 46% of products were cheaper than their Black Friday price on at least one day during the six months afterwards. So, while there were certainly deals to be had, and prices are often considerably lower on Black Friday than at other times of year, if it’s the very lowest price you’re after, and you’re not in a hurry, it may be worth holding off. When is the best time to buy? We used our data to try to determine the best time of year to buy popular products. As you might expect, some items did hit their lowest prices in line with big sale periods - for example, smart speakers such as the Amazon Echo were cheapest around Black Friday, Christmas and New Year. Yet, many popular products, like fitness trackers and kettles, didn’t show a clear trend - making the best time to buy them, whenever there’s a good discount. Tips for bagging a Black Friday bargain The end of November can be a great time to find deals, but don’t be pressured by short-lived promotions or claims of big discounts. If you need to buy something, always make sure you’ve done your research and checked product reviews first. Online customer reviews claim the Beko CEG7425 Bean to Cup coffee machine is 'outstanding'. But it's one of a range of products our tough lab tests have found seriously fails to impress. A fifth of households are now more than 3km from their nearest current account provider, but can the alternatives really meet people's banking needs? Banks have closed down thousands of high-street branches over the past three decades and instead ploughed millions into the Post Office to serve people’s basic banking needs. If your boiler has stopped working in a cold snap, it's worth checking your condensate pipe to see if it’s frozen before you call out a heating engineer. Your boiler's condensate pipe will run directly into a drain, in most cases externally to your property. If this pipe gets blocked with ice, or anything else, then your boiler will automatically shut down as a safety measure. How to defrost your condensate pipe - Locate your condensate pipe. This will be a white pipe that comes out of the wall behind your boiler and runs directly into an outside drain. - Boil a kettle and leave it to cool for 10-15 minutes so that it's warm rather than boiling. - Starting from the top and working your way down, pour the water over the frozen pipe until the ice within has melted. - Reset your boiler and it should work as normal. How does a 100% mortgage work?

100% mortgages can seem appealing, especially if you’re a first-time buyer and struggling to save. 'Chatterboxes' was not much liked by the critics when they first saw it in the late 1880s. Now it offers an exciting missing link between French and British Impressionism. When 'Chatterboxes' by Philip Wilson Steer (1860-1942) was exhibited in the New English Art Club exhibition of 1887, it was greeted with derision by the conservative British press. The Illustrated London News led the outcry, complaining that the painting’s virtues ‘are obscured from our perception by the apparent smudginess or slovenliness of the method’.
